Honk when you pass by, or stop in for a burger and an Alaskan Amber, I'll be at the RiverView RV near North Pole when you pass through.

I am still a "go" with wife and dog and 5er. I have been trying to find out what , if any, regs there are about having foods including meats with you crossing the borders into Canada. So far no success. I am pretty sure there is a prohibition about carrying meat or fresh fruit into the U. S. from Canada. GeneA

I have always carried meats and fresh fruit/vegetables. Never been asked. They are looking for guns and other dangerous items, wanted people, people trying to sell things and people without a means of providing for themselves. They will ask you about alcohol and tobacco. You are allowed to carry limited amounts of this. You may also be asked if you are carrying large amounts of cash (over 10 grand). If you are, let me carry some for you:D

Don't forget your birth certificate and photo id or passport. I have heard they are being pretty tight about this this year. Don't try to sneak a firearm, especially a handgun.

Side trip

Hi Marty,

At your suggestion, I started looking into a visit to Dutch Harbor

and after a little reading, wound up being intrigued by it.

Sooo... on the 17th of July at 7am I'll have to be at the Anchorage airport for a flight to Unalaska. A couple of days there, then the four day return trip by ferry to Homer , followed by a commuter flight back to Anchorage in the afternoon of the 22nd.

Best I can figure, this should fit well within your outlined schedule and not interfere with anyone's plans.

If the other folks do a little sight seeing and visiting on the Kenai Peninsula and Valdez, I might even catch up with them on the way back (well maybe).

Les

Marty, Don't know if you are keeping a list of possible 'trippers', but if you had my name down? ? please remove it--decided to take wife on cruise/train the first trip up---still want to pull the trailer up, but will wait a year or two... . She's just got into remission and think ship and train would be easier on her just now... ... . THANKS for all the planning and such... ... . R, J. B. ;)

? route

Jerry and others in the know,

Witch route are you going to take to Dawson Creek? Up to Sault Ste. Marie and take Canadian Hwy 1 west or are you staying south of the border into Montana?

What is your opinion about the advantages, pros and cons of either way?

Considering scenery, cost of food, fuel, camping and such.

Anyone with recent experience in these areas? Suggestions?

Thanks

Les

route to Dawson Creek

Hi Les Our tentative route is up to St. Ignace then west on U. S. 2 across upper peninsula thru Duluth across Minn. thru Bemidgi an Grand Forks, then continue west to Minot, N. D. 12miles west of Minot turn Northwest on N. D. 52 follow it to Canadian border cross border at North Portal follow canadian no. 39 to can. 1 follow it west about 5mi to Moose Jaw turn north on can. 2 . Go 55 miles to Chamberlin. turn N. west on can. 11 stay on can. 11 to Saskatoon turn west on can 16 (transcanada hwy. ) go to Edmonton turn north west on can 43 cont. thru white court, valley view, grande prarie an finally Dawson Creek. My reason for going north from Det. is to avoid the zoo around Chicago. I only go that way if it is absolutely necessary. no fun at all. I have been to Minot, Grand Forks no problems as for the rest of the Canadian portion of the trip its new to me. Will probably return thru Mont. wish to visit the Little Bighorn again. We are avoiding Banff Lake Louise, Glacier Natl. park, because we feel those areas are a trip on their own. As for trying to figure costs it is hard to do with the exchange an all. So we sort of picked a direct route including many places we have never seen. Jerry

Thanks Jerry

Your route is fairly direct to Dawson, off the interstates and away from most of the big cities, all of which I like. In fact I highlighted it on my map as a good way for me to go also.

I now have Five possible routes outlined as a way to get there and back...

For a while I was thinking about going west from Winnipeg on 1 and 16 all the way to Prince George then north on 97 to Dawson, but that is definitely the long way to the barn, so that plan may wind up in the Recycle Bin.

Will have to decide as I back out of our driveway.

CTDs to Alaska passing through 'Stoon

jcarew and others, if you are passing through Saskatoon and want to take a break give me a shout. There is a new Husky truck stop on #16 just North of Saskatoon. There is a camp ground about a mile north of the Husky right on 16. There are Husky truck stops all through Canada and I have found them to be okay.

I wish I could join you guys on this trip. I moved my daughter up to Whitehorse the end of October and want to make that trip in summer some time. I found the highway in excellent shape. There was only about 50 miles where the highway was a little rough.

If any one has any questions about coming up this way pm me or ask me on this forum. I am hauling campers up to this area from Indiana and Ontario so I may not be able to answer promptly. I will be leaving Friday the 30th for my next run. It takes five days on the average to make a run.

Good Luck I am jealous.

Awesome!!! Just found this post. I retire from the Air Force 1 Sep 03 and have planned to return to Alaska during my terminal leave. In fact, I plan to streak through Dawson Creek about the date mentioned in previous posts.

Will be in a hurry to get to Alaska, fish will be in, you know. Can't wait to get my boat back into the water. You see, I just left Alaska, not by choice, last July... military forced me to move, was there for 8 years. I left our boat there so I'd have a reason (excuse) to go back.

If anyone is interested in seeing Whittier, possibly Homer, from the inside of a boat, let me know. I'll have friends/family in and out during my 5-week stay, but will try to squeeze a TDR member or two in.

My trip down the ALCAN last year was smooth (better than my trip up in 1994 anyway). No flats, no busted windshield, stressed dog though... he hated leaving Alaska too. Between truck and trailer I weighed 16,900lbs. Made about 600 miles per day.

PM me if interested... looking forward to the trip.

Just bringing this back up. I plan to have at least one oil change about half way through this trip. I do my own maintenance ordinarily but it would be too much of a hassle to try that on this trip. So my question is where would be a good place to get that done in the Fairbanks or Anchorage area?

GeneA,

If you are in the Fairbanks area and need maintenance, don't hesitate to call and I'll direct you to my place and you can take care of most all of your maintenance. That goes for all the rest of you TDR members who are coming up this summer also. If you have slide in campers I can't get you into my garage but if you are pulling, we can unhitch you and get the truck into the garage.

Mid trip service

I can offer my shop to those in need, but again I don't have a tall

enough door if you have a slide in. And I can take care of waste

oil for a couple of trucks if needed. I'm about 45 miles outside of

Anchorage, just give me a little lead time if you can.
