Thanks, TDR Staff

Does anybody need a good used Dometic refrigerator?

Need someone to tow car!!! ASAP!!!

Marty,

Your kids will be welcome to eat and sleep with Porsche, my ten year old... ... ... ... ... . German Shepherd. She's friendly.

Harvey

Holy Cow a bunch of TDR guys coming to AK... this ought to be fun. When do you all plan on being in the Kenai Penn area?? I thought I might be able to have a hot dog roast or someting for you all. Heck we Alaskans have been talking about a camping trip, this may be just the time to do it... Let me know and I will see what happens with work and what the AK Diesel Bombers are up to...

mbaston - you need to come to one of our AK Diesel Bombers meetings... they are usually in Wasilla or Eagle River. If I am in town and if it all works out I think the wiener roast would be in Deep Creek at the big campground on the beach. . ought to be enough room and its cheap.

John aka JR2

Sounds good. We will probably be around here the 12th or so. Let me know about these bombing meetings. Didn't know a thing about them.

Marty

I thought of a couple pieces of advice for ya when traveling to my homestate.

The first piece is to remember that every business listed in the milepost got there by paying for the spot. Quite often you will find another place in the area that is not in the book, and they are usually cheaper... at least that has been my experinece.

On the subject of mosquito repelent... . the best way to test it is to spray it on a piece of plastic. If it metls the plactic it will ward off the bugs, if not don't bother..... don't laugh as I have several plastic watch bands that have spots from the DEET.

Have a good trip and I hope to see some of you if I can.

JR2

JR2,

Hot dogs on the beach with a bunch of Alaska TDR members sounds like fun. It would be even better if a bunch of you members in Alaska will join us for part of the trip.

Harvey

Hot dogs? I can get all the hot dogs I want in NE. I am looking forward to some fresh salmon poached over a charcoal grill.

I am handling the tour guide up stuff. It would be great if other Alaskan's can put on some events once they are here.

Thanks,

Marty
BTW, my phone is 907-745-3029

Bob -

Just thinking outloud here but for this year I was thinking about a informal bar-b-q at one of our fine Alaska State Parks hosted by the AK diesel bombers, maybe in Deep Creek or where ever. I don't know if Piers would make the trip with such short notice.

In the long run I would like to try and pull off a semi national TDR event in Alaska. This might include someting like Mbaston is doing (leading the troops North) and then some kind of big event (mini May Madness) in the Anchorage area and then a chance to head out and see the rest of the state. This would be the event to invite Piers to, along with just about every other vendor with any interest at all.

Hi Marty I read about your caravan to Alaska an it sounds like good fun. I wonder if you have room for one more rig? We have a Class C built on an 002 Cab an Chassis H. O. 6spd. 4:10 we also pull an old Toyota pickup. We would be coming from s. e. Mich an would like to meet up with your caravan at Dawson Creek on June 30, if it is ok, I have a few questions I would like to ask on a later post. Thanks J. Carew

Please, come along. The more the merrier. Check on a previous post about one reservation you might want to make.

Welcome!

Marty

Marty and other participants,

I phoned the number provided on the BC Parks website today to inquire about accomodations at Liard River Hotsprings Park for a truck and trailer with a combined length exceeding 40'.

First, it should be known that the folks who answer the phone only make reservations. They have no direct connection with the various parks or with park management. The guy I spoke with was very helpful but explained that they are no longer able to call the various park managers and discuss special situations that arise.

I explained that my truck and trailer have a combined length exceeding the 40' maximum allowed in this park and asked if I would be permitted to disconnect and park in a friend's space. His first response was that most park managers are usually helpful and they would probably allow me to do that, but he couldn't make any promises. I told him I'd accept that and I'd like to make my reservation.

He began taking the information then became thoughtful and said maybe he should ask his supervisor to make sure I didn't arrive thinking I had a reservation and not be allowed in.

He left me on hold for a minute or so and when he returned he explained that his supervisor said the spaces are actually 55' to 60' in length. The reason for the 40' restriction is lack of room to maneuver larger rigs!

I explained that I've been towing trailers for more than 30 years, am fairly skilled at it, and figured I could park the trailer if they'd allow me in. He gently discouraged me from making a reservation explaining that I could show up and be rejected, possibly forfeiting my advance payment.

I've never been there, of course, so I don't have an opinion whether maneuvering will be tight but possible, or simply impossible. I also have no idea of the personality of the park manager and whether he/she will be flexible and allow me in if I can convince them I can park the trailer in a narrow space.

I think I'll pass on making a reservation at Liard Hotsprings Park. Maybe I'll get lucky when we arrive and there will be a space open as a result of a cancellation and I'll be allowed in. If not, I'll just park somewhere else.

Alaska meet

John , JR2

What you are proposing is a great idea and sounds very interesting and fun, but probably too late for this year. If you are going to organize something like that, you will need to get your plan together, get your CTD chapter to help, get the the ducks in a row, and a lot of enticements and exposure in the TDR mag as well as the internet.

Alaska is very inviting and it's most people's dream to visit there, but not too many folks have the vacation time and the money, without planning for months ahead.

Monitor our small group and see how we progress. If Marty does'nt get burned out or ticked off, he'll be a great resource for you.

In the meantime something modest like a little get together, or a line on some good places to visit that are not too touristy, or a good restaurant would certainly be appreciated...

ctd to alaska

Hi Marty thanks for the invite, got a confirmed reservation for the Laird park on July 2, what campground are we going to meet at in Dawson Creek, I saw a good sam park + a few others in my directory, Jcarew

Harvey

It is doubtful that there will be an opening for a drive in unless you get there early in the morning. However, there are other places to park around there including an RV park. We will take care of you.

jcarew... . haven't decided yet where to meet in Dawson Creek. I will work on that this week.

Marty

BRUTUS -

Oh man I am with you, it would be one heck of an even to organize and schedule and I would not even consider doing it with out at least a year or more to organize it. Our little club here in AK is good, but we are going to need some serious help if we ever plan anything that big.

John

JR2,

That is a good idea. If you or Mbaston will pick up the ball and run with it, I'll step up to the plate with you and help. We don't have a club in Fairbanks... . YET but I'm working on it and trying to get a core of members. Anywise let me know if I can help.

WD

I won't be able to make the trip this year. Hopefully, next year I will be able to clear my schedule. When I was in Anchorage I found a place called the Sourdough Mining Co. I took the couple I stayed with for Sunday brunch to express my thanks for opening their home to me. They had a good Sunday brunch with more items that I can name. It was right across from a chocolate and berry store. Sorry I can't remember the name. I thought it was a very interesting store, and seeing the waterfall of chocolate was impressive. That and Beluga Point are the points of interest that I enjoyed on my trip. Just wanted to throw out some additional suggestions for stops.

Can anyone from Palmer help with an answer for me. When I went through on my way to Fairbanks I stoppedoutside of town and talked with a couple of guys about a racetrack they wanted to build. They said they were talking with the State of Alaska about possible plans for a road course in the Palmer area. This was almost two years ago when I was there.

Paul

There is a drag strip outside of Palmer in The Butte. There is a circle track in Wasilla. That is all that I am aware of.
