So far I haven't heard specifics on how the Cummins 600 is "pre-equipped" or configured for an exhaust brake. Can anyone give specific details on what this means? Pre-wired for a switch via the ECM? Hardware? Butterfly valve in the exhaust all set to go? What is the powersoruce to activate the brake?

Thanks!

Just wondering the same thing about the exhaust brake. Especially after reading Joe's article about the 600. Is it standard or an option?

For 2004. 5, the exhaust brake is an aftermarket option just as it was for 2003. The switch, harness, brake, and vacuum pump are all included in the kit and I'm aware of no more "pre-equipping" than there was in 2003.

The exhaust brake itself is different for 2004. 5. The Cummins part number is 4089598 and the corresponding Mopar part number is 82208835.

Are the changes in the 2004. 5 exhaust brake due to the wiring harness changes that the 2004 have or is the brake itself different? And if the was changes to the brake does it have a spot for a pyro probe?

I suspect that the changes to the brake are because of the change to the exhaust manifold and 4" exhaust system.

The changes are to the brake only and are due to the exhaust manifold and exhaust system changes. The new model has a 4" diameter outlet to match the new exhaust pipe size. Based on requests from TDR members, there is a pyro port on MY2004. 5 exhaust brakes.

Now that sounds pretty cool. So how much are these cummins/jacobs brakes supposed to cost and where's the best place to buy one? What advantages would you say there are to the pacbrake, other than being 'officially recommended'? I think I'm going to be ordering my 2004. 5 as soon as my '99 sells...

Is the 2004.0 48RE exhaust brake compatible?

Carlton,

Perhaps you know if my 2004. 0 (built 9/03) can have the exhaust brake installed without voiding the transmission warranty. It has the Tow Haul switch, just not sure if it locks the TC in Drive and 2nd?

Wishing now I would have waited for the 2004. 5 , but the EGR scare got the better of me. If I would have known DC would build a 50 state HO with 325/600 I sure would have waited. Still in all, I love this truck and its performance.

All input and opions appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

I looked at the e-brake that came in for my truck at the dealer today and was looking for a pyro port but saw none, did i just not see it or what, my truck is scheduled to be built tomorrow and ship on Wed. from Saltillo, I wonder if they ordered me the wrong brake it looked as though it had a 4 in. outlet but I could be wrong.

Joe, see this thread for all of the details regarding an exhaust brake on a 48RE. In summary, it is not warrany-approved at this point.

It sounds to me that they ordered the wrong brake. The MY04. 5 brake definitely has a pyro port. The MY03 brake has a 4" inlet and a 3. 5" outlet. It's easy to mistake the exit for being 4". Be sure to give your dealer a call today and make sure they ordered the correct part numbers.

MY2004. 5 Exhaust Brake:

Cummins p/n 4089598

Mopar p/n 82208835

It doesn't seem like the pyro port really does all that much good since most like to have a pre-turbo EGT anyway.

A big THANK YOU Carlton

I think you just saved me alot of money, we were going to drill & tap the e-brake. That would have gotten expensive.

Thanks Carlton

I knew it was too good to be true.

I guess I will just wait and buy my next new truck in 2010 when the 500hp/900ftlb model comes out with a Kenworth E-brake on the auto *LMAO*

Seriously though... . the time you spend helping us here is very much appreciated.

Regards,

Joe
