Because my rig will be apart for a while I'm going to build an engine stand for my 6BT. Yeah, I know it's way heavy, that's why this thing is gonna be stout. I'm making it from 2" square tube (3/16" thick) and DOM round tube, and I'm building it so that the engine will 'flip' front-to-back, verses 'roll' side-to-side on a typical stand. The back of the block will bolt up much the same as a regular engine stand, but the girdle will be horseshoe shaped and will include side mounts to bolt up to the engine mounts. The whole jig will pivot on the sides near the middle of the block, and will sit in an A-framed cradle.

My question is this: Are there any schymatics for or existing stands like this, and do any of y'all have any past experience building one?

Most specifically, I need to know about where the center of gravity is on a dressed out 6BT, for example along the fan axis, middle-lower-upper portion of the block, etc.

PS: I'm also building a big honkin' crane, about 10' wide, 6' deep, and adjustable between 5'-12' high, capable of lifting over 1000 lbs of anything and moving it around the shop. It's being built to specifically lift the bed, cab, frame, and the 6BT, and to place them out of the way, and to straddle my flatbed for the body to go to the sandblaster. This way I won't have to bribe my best buddies with beer and pizza to help me lift the big pieces around! :-laf Scheesh, nothing about this project is going to be small or light... . ;)

It is my goal in life to make one pilgramage to your garage before I die. :p

Can't help with the diagram, but YOU, are the man, Sam!

Here is a link to one style I found.

The only place I have seen anything heavyer was in the service. We had one in our shop that would hold a inline detroit 6 and spin on the long axes. If memory serves me right. I think that stand had a rating of 6k on it. It was 5' tall where the bellhousing fitted. Then it was 6' wide and 10' long. It had massive steel wheels on all four corners.

Be sure to use a gear box for turning. Trying to turn this size engine without one will most likely get you hurt or the engine damaged.

The other item your building is called a gantry crane. Here is a link to one brand. The main issue with these is a level smooth floor. They can tip over easy with loads on them if a wheel gets caught.

In my Cummins manual is a picture of an adapter that is exactly what you are describing. It bolts to the side of the block and hooks to a stand.

I'll see if I can get a scan of it and post it here or maybe I can bring it by sometime.

Later,

Thanks for the info fellas - that is some good intel in the weblinks on the other styles of stands and gantrys. What I have planned is very similar and those reinforce my thoughts. Cool.

Good to talk with you Joe - Another Colo Springs Bomber! We're looking to start a Colorado Springs TRD chapter - I'm going to talk with RPatton and Pastor B to see what if anything needs to be done to start one up.

Coolieo - talk to you laters amigos,

how about this idea:

Is there such a thing as a junk Cummins block, from a bone yard, something like that, that could be used as a template for the jig, and if so I could use that so I could have the stand ready when I tear the thing apart? I'm not sure I've ever heard of a Cummins actually grenading.....

Where would I find a core Cummins block that is totally no good? What I really want to do is make a wooden Cummins block/head combo that I can use to make the jig, but I'll need a core to do that correctly. I dunno, just typing out loud...
