I left work early to purchase a transfer pump for my 98. 5 from a local Freightliner place. . Guess they figure most people own these trucks don't work during the day. .

Anyway, The guy asks me if it was alright that he had it drop shipped direct from Cummins... for a mear $13. 00 shipping charge. .

I said NO, its not alright!!! It really piss's me off that I called every Cummins Rep in PA... And NO-ONE had it. Then I find out none of the PA Distributer's have it either. So now its my problem... . so I should pay for shipping because they screwed up?

He said they're on back-order. . I said No I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER... I'm replacing mine @ 36K... . No wonder their on back-order... He said it should still be under warranty... I said... Ya... ran out about 200-300 miles ago, and since its a 98. 5... wouldn't matter anyway.

Needless to say, Since I left work early, and I needed the pump... I coughed up $150 for the pump. . and shipping charges...

Poor guy. . Just try'n to do his job and I unload on him. . When I left, he knew I was just frustrated and it wasn't personal.

But I am piss'd at Cummins... 36K miles... . even 50K-75K miles is rediculous. My little Acura's fuel pump is still going @ 220K miles... YET the big mighty American Cummins fails @ 36K!!

OK I'm done. .

Deezal Man, your lift pump is covered by the 5 year 100 thousand mile warranty. Don't let the service manager tell you different. It is a Cummins part BOLTED to a Cummins engine. My dealer says no problem its on the motor its covered... ... ... Pete

deezal i feel your pain , if you are buying a pump yourself i wouldn't bother with the stock pump and spend less than $100 for the carter 4601HP delivered to you , maybe another 30 for the pieces to put it in place . you need a 3/8npt to -6 male , 2 right angle parker push lock female -6 JIC fittings , an aeroequip -6 to 12mm weber carb adaptor , better yet drill and tap your filter housing to 1/4 npt , that adaptor is cheaper , about 8 inches of parker push lock hose and a 3/8 npt to 3/8 compression right angle adapter . DONE ... .

Not more than two months ago, and at 75K miles I had my LLift pump replaced under warrenty.

Then about 2-3 weeks later at 76K I had the injection pump replaced.

If they tell you it is not covered under warrenty, have them put it in writing!!

Then go straight to the top of Daimler Chrysler. It IS COVERED under warrenty!!

I will keep replacing my stock lift pump, until I am out of warrenty, then I will upgrade to a "pusher" type pump, and ditch the Banjo bolts.

Just my Thoughts,,

lift pump warranty

I just had a run in with DC about my warranty. I had a bad crankshaft position sensor. I found out that it wasn't covered under the engine warranty. Looking through the warranty book info, I noticed that the lift pump wasn't covered under the engine warranty either. The engine warranty covers only a few listed components. Both were covered under the emissions warranty. (https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=21493) As I mentioned in the other post, the emission warranty for a 2500 is 2/24K, the pump and sensor would be cover by the bumper-bumper to 3/36K. Heavy duty trucks (3500's) have a longer emissions warranty (5/50K) and of course CA emissions warranty is different (7/70K I think). MA and VT are also covered under the CA emissions warranty.

In short if you have a 2500, your lift pump should only be covered for 3/36K.

I got my crank position sensor replaced under the engine warranty. It states in the warranty that all internal components are covered. I went to the top with this and pushed them to get it covered, because the part of the sensor that goes out is internal to the engine. I did not mess with trying to get dodge to fix my lift pump, just went ahead and made it right by installing a mallory marine 4150 and have not had any problems with it for 50k miles now.

My Cummins distributor in CT said he had to try 4 different distibution centers to find one of the Lift pumps. Seems like there is a real shortage of them.

I had my Clockspring replaced monday at the dealer and they said they would order my a lift pump and replace it under warranty. I told them fine, BUT the truck had to be fixed by thursday morning. So i called wensday at 5pm and they said, "Sorry, the pump has not arrived" I told them forget it and i called Cummins and had it FedExed to me. It arrived the next day at 10am from Tennesee. Cost me $139. 00 for the pump, $4. 00 for the Banjo sealing washers and $14. 00 for Fed Ex shipping.

The nicest thing was, i did it myself and those clowns did not get the chance to mess up my truck.

If you want something done right, do it yourself

Here's a Cummins shop that had 4 of them left after I bought mine yesterday:

The warrantee if different for different model years. I know on my 1998 2500, the liftpump was covered under the HD truck emissions warrantee for 80K miles.
