What other Diesel rigs do you have?

Cummins afficionados: I recall hearing somewhere that the Cummins B series engine was/is used in some Case/Int. tractors. Can anyone tell me when this first started and what tractor model had these engines? Thanks for any information.

Not sure what model was the first, but I believe their current Maxxum and some MX models use the B5. 9 under the disguise of a Case/Cummins joint venture called CDC (Consolidated Diesel Corp).

Late 80s? Maybe since thats when they came out with the Magnums with C8. 3s.

Interesting stuff, hope that helps a little, I'm trying to learn more about this subject myself too.

JD: Yes it's interesting. The Cummins pops up all over. I've seen a Cummins B in a large trackmobile at work, used for moving rail cars. Weight of the unit was about 90,000 lbs. We only got to use it for awhile. As for tractors, someday I'd like to add a diesel tractor to keep the gas JD 3010 company. There's just nothing like the sound of the Cummins B, so I guess I'll have to just stop at a few Case/Int. dealers. Thanks!

My 82' Case 2090 has the 504 CI Case engine in it. I have a used tractor price guide with some specs in it that will have that info. I will check it out and get back. Some of the models that White makes have the 5. 9 engine.

I have saved time and running around picking up parts for my 5. 9 at my Case dealer. Works for me!

Back when the V8 Cummins was around, they were put into various tractors by the way. I imagine you could suck up a good bit of fuel over the course of the day with one of them.

A AC 440 4x4 tracter had a 555 cummins V8. Known as a triple nickel. I had a AC 8070 that had a 8. 3 aftermarket in it. It hauled ars, and striped the transmission out in a year. Had to bomb that. The engine was stock at 220hp.

According to my Intertec's Used Tractor Price Guide the first use of the Consolidated Diesel 359 cu. in. in Case tractors was in '85 in the 1896 (96 pto hp) and the 2096 (116 pto hp). White started using them in '88 in their 100, 120, and 140.

I used to drive a 1979 White RoadBoss II semi tractor with the 903 V-8 Cummins in it. I would get about 4 to 4-1/2 MPG at 60-65 MPH; That's 14 to 16 gal. per hour of fuel. Engine was a VT-903, rated 320 HP at 2600 and 850-900#/ft of torque at 1700 RPM. Last time I fueled up, last weekend was $1. 499/gal so Yes, It could burn $24 worth of fuel per hour!.

KWentling, I have the Intertec book also. I see in 1990 the 239 and 359 CI engines are listed as a Case engines. Only the larger displacements are listed as Cummins. Interesting.

5.9sssssssss

One of the most interesting farm tractors to use the (little) 5. 9 is JCB. They are a English company that has specilized in loader backhoes. They came out with a 4x4, 4 wheel steer farm tractor that will go 45 mph on the highway. 4 wheel air disk brakes, Air hookup for air trailer brakes, front suspension. And powered by the 5. 9 Cummins. Hesston manufactures a swather (read hay cutter city boys) that is powered by the 5. 9 Cummins. Timberjack makes a log skidder powered the same way. We live close to salt water and there are many many fishing and pleasure boats powered by the 5. 9s. I rode on a ferry that crosses the Colombia river that is powered by four 5. 9s. The number of uses for this engine goes on and on. I have yet to see anything but a truck powered by a International 444. Why is this??????

All of our tractors on the farm have the Cummins in them. Our MX200 and 9330 and even our loader tractors. I think its model is C80. Our case skid loader has the kubota diesel in it. Our Ford-New Holland combine has cummins in it too. As long as I can remember all of our stuff has had it.

You have to be real careful comparing just displacements to determine what was Cummins and IHC in some of the older IHC and C/IH equip. IH had an engine plant in Nuess Germany that made a 310 & 358 CID 6 and 239 cid 4 cyl diesel. Good little engines they put into about everything. They also made several other smaller 4 cyl engines and a 3 cyl variation. :)

DENNY... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

I could be wrong here, but I believe the intended purpose of the "B" was for Consolidated to use in machinery such as what is being discussed. Naturally it wasn't for a good 5 years before it saw a Dodge. On my job, we have the "B" in many machines doing many jobs but the most popular is in a Case W series loaders. Now we're getting ISB's in Jhonston street sweepers, and we don't see so much as a burp from them.

Yes, definitely agree that the original purpose of the B series was to power a new generation of Ag/Construction equipment for the "new" Case Corp, being the next generation of Case/IH joint engineering of new Ag/Construction equipment that happened from the mid to late 80s.

Have a late model Case 2590 with the 504ci engine and firmly believe that the CDC 505 (C8. 3) was designed to replace this engine for the next gen tractor line keeping its characteristics in mind. Haven't really seen anything as to how the B series was derived, but I would think it was designed to target the mid-range tractor/construction line below the C series.

Love the B series, have two of them doing irrigation power work, they love to work 24/7 under extreme conditions. Have a C8. 3 and an N14, also doing irrigation work, excellent. My farmer has a couple of Steigers with N14s, taking many hours of abuse, great to see these motors in action. Local buddy who is a Cat Tech, doesn't mind doing Cummins rebuilds on the side, due to easy access to parts and ease of maintenance.

When my old Case 2590 gives it up, plan to replace it with a Case Magnum/CDC 505. 2590 motor still holding up, trans had to have a rebuild recently,

but hey same old story too much power for the trans, huh?!

Sorry, but I guess I revealed my Cummins prejudice, but hey its real world prejudice!
