Page 26, upper right hand page of the December edition of Peterson's 4 Wheel and Offroad. Online reader poll asking "Which crate engine would you buy if money were no object?" Results:

35% High Output Cummins Turbodiesel

24% Ram Jet 502

17% 514 Ford

8% Viper V-10

6% LS1

4% 430hp/392 Ford

3% 402 Magnum

It doesn't say how many people replied, but nevertheless it is quite the crowd to be included with, let alone be ranked above. Looks like the word is starting to get out finally.

Well now

 :D That just makes my day, since I have a complete 24V, new, shiny, shrunk wrapped, crate motor sitting here. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Think I'll go look at it:cool:

Like money in the Bank I figure.

I beet up on a pumped up Viper once on the dyno, he came in at 476hp. Then we rolled the old Dodge Diesel up after some persuading because according to everyone there it was a waste of time, and low and behold up cam 502 hp shutting everyone up as well as sending them to the eyewash shower for a eye cleaning after the smoke cleared.

BPine- I agree that it's fun to out power the supercars on the dyno, BUT, nothing beats going through the gears in my Viper! Horsepower or not, and besides look at the differences between H. P. / Weight ratio. Truck 7000#/500 H. P - Viper 3300#/475 H. P

My Viper is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!:D :D

Back at the mopar shootout at Atlanta dragway in September there were a bunch of vipers (15-20) there having a shootout as well as the diesels. Too bad the vipers couldn't keep up :p ! A quote from the anouncer when the vipers were racing "These guys better hope they don't meet up with some of those diesels on the street!" It was one of those priceless moments :D .

Whenever the Ford club rents the track at St. Louis we always show up with our Buicks to play. Usually there will be 4 to 5 Vipers show up and the Buick Turbo V6 guys all stand in line to beat up on them. It's funny to watch. There is one Henessey Viper there that runs 11. 5 in the 1/4 which isn't to bad but he goes through a lot of clutches. Most of the other Vipers run from 12. 2 to 12. 6 for the early models. They are chick magnets but they really should stay away from dragstrips.

I agree Tom I wouldn't want to meet him at a light, there wouldn't be much left of the mighty Ram when the race was done but it sure was nice to see the looks on there face when the #'s came up on the dyno. :D

I agree with all of you that my Viper is not the ultimate 1/4 mile weapon. Too hard to launch with slow 60 ft. times, but the Viper was never intended to be a dragster. Bring on those Buick turbos and 500 Hp Cummins for a 0-175-0 mph contest or meet me at Buttonwillow for a few hot laps on the road course and I will make you a believer! But I do love my Cummins also, especially to pull my Viper trailer.

I was just thinking that corvettes would get laughed at on the dragstip. But a car like a corvette or a viper is just whats needed on say the PCH winding through the west coast scenery! and cooking through the turns.

Just remember, your 505 hp didn't come from Dodge or Cummins, but ...

PDR 370 injectors, #4 TST plate, Govoner spring kit, Ported Head, ATS manifold, PDR HX-40, Performance Diesel Propane system, CON OFE SB clutch, 4" Jardine exhaust. Thanks to South Bend Clutch & Piers Diesel Research.

How much did all that cost? Now, put some of that kind of dough into a Viper, and it will sing on the dyno and on the 'strip.

I'm not knocking your numbers on the dyno, but let's just compare apples to something resembling apples.

Just my 2 cents
