Seems like I saw this on here somewhere or in one of the TDR isssues.

Could someone please give a chronological "history" of the engines and the upgrades through the years. Such as years of the 12v, 24v, the H. O. versions (and maybe what that means), etc? Then maybe we can put a sticky on it in this forum??

Quick lesson 1989-93 is called 1st gen. That refers to the body style. They had the Bosch VE ( rotary ) pump and were all ( auto and man trans ) 160 hp. In 1994 the body style changed ( 2nd gen ) and the P7100 ( inline ) fuel pump was used. The horse power started to go up ( up to 215 hp ) and got different from auto to std trans ( see this link - Dodge Ram Specifications - for some details. These engines all had 12 valve ( 1 intake and 1 exhaust per cyl x6 ) It gets more complicated from here on. On Jan 1 1998 ( the new emission year ) the 1998. 5 models came out ( horse power now up to 245). These are the 24 valve engines (2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cyl x 6 cylinders ). The HO ( high output ) versions were the later of these models with a 6 speed trans , 245 vs 235 with a 5 speed and auto. In 2003 the body changed again, 3rd gen, and the HPCR, high pressure common rail, engine was introduced. This is the "quiet" one. Horse power started at 250 for early auto and 305 for std trans then in 2004. 5 it went to 325. The new 6. 7l came out in 2007 in cab and chassis rated at 305, the after the next emission wave on Jan 1/2007 the 6. 7 was available in the pickup and is rated at 350hp. For a nutshell that sure was a mouthfull. Shadrach
