Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cummins ECM

Does/can the Cummins ECM know the difference between an auto and a stick? The reason I ask is the MOPAR/Cummins uprate kit for the 24V is a new ECM and it is advertised for the 5 speed only. However if the ECM doesn't know what the transmission is can I put it on an auto equipped 24V?

I'm pretty sure I have heard of a NW Bombers doing this. I think the reason that they say not too is because of emmissions. Try a search with "Torques Maxis" or whatever they call it.

I believe that the members that did this had to give the parts dept. a VIN# from a standard trans truck before they could order the new ECM. They wouldn't order the piece without a proper VIN.

To the best of my recollection, yes there is a difference in the ECM's for manual and auto.

For what the Torqus Maximus provides power wise (10hp and 50 ft lbs for $900) or whatever the price is, you can do a hell of alot better buying an Edge EZ (60hp and 150ft lbs for $500) or equivalent product for your truck.

Is there a specific difference between the auto and manual ECM's? I dunno, the one in which you would need to ask is Marco. He's done lots of work with the ECM and understands what they do.



I do know that the reason you have to give Cummins your VIN # if you do the swap is due to how much power the stock auto can handle. The Torquis Maximus ECM is rated beyone what the auto can carry. It doesn't matter if your transmission is upgraded or not, unless you know a Cummins rep that doesn't care about his job you will have a tough time getting one. BTW, you will have to give them your ECM as a core charge.



To answer your questions in a more detailed manner. Is the Cummins Uprate Kit (Torquis Maximus) worth the $1000. NO not at all. I went out and bought one to see what the hype was and all it did was starting the fueling cure a couple of RPM's sooner. It starts fueling at 1600 vs 1800. NO big Deal. Drop a couple of bills on an EZ box and you have a better power curve then what the ECM gives you. Does this make sense?

Thanks guys for the info. I believe you are right on the mark here. I didn't realize they want over $900 for this thing. I can get the vin# and stuff from a friends 5spd but I will spend the money on a EZ instead. Justin hit the nail on the head with the EZ getting twice the power for half the money. There are some advantages to the TM that the EZ will never approach, but there are some other "flaws" that you should be aware of. TM used is WAY under $900 if you find one. PM me if you want to talk about the TM.
