What's my question?

Engine Lugging Guidelines

As a new owner I am currious about Cummins history and why they are such desired engines?

What other types of vehicles and/or machinery can you find the Dodge Cummins engines in?

What do all the A, B & C and Series Numbers mean (Cummins 5. 9C4)?

Read an article today in Trailer Life that says "Fords new 6. 0L Diesel is the king of Diesel horspower and unlike the HO Cummins it's 50 state legal".

Why isn't the HO Cummins legal in California?

Thanks in advance, -Erik

The letters are series designations. B/C/L/M/N/NH are just some of them. B- 3. 9L and 5. 9L, C- 8. 3L, L-10, M-11, N14 and NH are both 855 CID. The numbers usually, but not always refer to the engine displacement in cubic inches or liters. Sometimes refer to horsepower as in the Signiture 600. The 24v in the Ram is the ISB. Also have ISC, ISX and the list goes on. If you see VT555, it is a V-8, turbocharged, 555 CID engine. Same idea with the VT903. Just to name a few. :)

Cummins engines are in medium/ heavy duty trucks, farm tractors, harvesting equipment, gen. sets, and... ... ...

Built stong, last a long time. The B-series used in the pick-ups are also used in medium duty applications. The Navistar/ Powerstroke engines are built more for light-duty use as in the Super Duty Ford trucks.

To be honest with you these engines are refered to as a 6BTA5. 9

6-inline 6 cylinder

B-b series motor

T-turbocharged

A-aftercooled(see story)

5. 9-5. 9 liters of displacment

what most people refer to as an intercooler is not really an intercooler. the actual name is an after-cooler because it cools the incoming air charge after the air leaves the compressor side of the turbo. Inter-coolers used many, many years ago would cool the air before it enters the turbocharger which was not very effective.

cummins has been around for a long time. The man who started this company was a pioneer in a lot of technology. His name was Clessie Cummins. He also invented the compression brake found in most big cat, cummins, and detroit engines. His colleagues thought was crazy for inventing the compression brake and said it was useless then 10 years later a drill company called jacobs chuck manufacturing decided that they liked the product and decided to market it.

in my opinion the cummins is a great engine but to be honest with you it is the only real diesel offered in a pick-up truck. powerstroke? duramax? i dont think so. to many moving parts

if cat was to be offered in the ford and a detroit offered in the chevy you would see a big change of opinion.

just words but...

Actually the term after-cooler is just as much a slang term as intercooler, they are most commonly called a charge air cooler or CAC.

Inner cooler - In the intake manifold, used coolant

After cooler - after turbocharer, old used coolant, New is CAC (charge-air-coolers) air radiators
