I was hauling cars last week and the truck started running funny... It just didn't feel right. Had a different vibration at idle, sounded almost like it had a knock over 2500 rpm. Just wasn't right. And it kept getting a little worse as I drove it... I figured I had a bad injector or the lift pump or vp44 was going so I called the local and only CT cummins dealer/repair facility. I call after 4 try's get a guy to schedule an appointment. ( I called cummins instead of going straight to dodge so I could eliminate the whole we can't solve it here we have to send it to cummins thing. It's my only truck so business stops when it does. ) So anyway I ask if they can do warranty work on the dodges with cummins in them, he says yes and I make an appointment for tuesday... I drop it off mon tell him whats wrong and that it's my only truck and it's my business not a homeowner special and I need it back asap. I call tuesday around 11am can't get a human in the service dept till 2:30. At which point I'm told there are 5-6 trucks that are a higher priority than mine because it's not a commercial vehicle!!! WTF? I was ******. Asked for the manager... He dissapears for about 5 mins then comes back to the phone and tells me they're bringing the truck in now, call back at 6:30pm for an update. 6:30 pm I call and I'm told there's nothing wrong with my truck. They drove it, plugged it in to the laptop, dyno'd it said it ran like a champ. I said fine I'll pick it up in the morning. I get there and they try to bill me for 2. 5 hours labor at $84 an hour. I said it's under warranty, He says no it's not, I say that's not what you told me on the phone... . So off to the manager we go. . He writes off the bill but swears there's nothing wrong with my truck, even to the point of asking me if I think I know more than his chief mechanic with 300 years experience. I left there all torqued off. Drove about 100 mile to mass, loaded 2 cars start driving back, going through my home town. Slow down because the dumptruck in front of me is turning in to a gravel bank and I hear this loud bang and see something go shooting out from under the truck. Throw on the flashers, jump out of the truck and find my harmonic balancer laying in the grass..... I about blew a gasket... . had a buddy of mine tow it to dodge, had to beg borrow and steal to get the 2 cars delivered and all I got from cummins was an oops... . I love my truck to death but unless dodge switches to the benz motor I will never buy another because I will never buy a cummins product again... . I have never been treated that badly by any provider of service ever!!!!! (end rant) had to tell someone... . :)

Your experience, although very bad, is the exception to the rule.

For the most part - these engines are VERY reliable. The same can't be said for all the stuff that bolts to the engines, but that's another story.

I can't make any comments about Cummins' repair shops out there... I've never had any use for one - and hopefully never will.

So, what kind of damage did the truck suffer through when the harmonic balancer ended up in the grass? Did it shear the bolts right off in the crank or... . ?

We have a Cummins repair facility here too that is worthless, they tryed to tell me my 2000 didnt have a lift pump that the VP44 was the only pump on the truck, but that is just a fluke thing, most Cummins facilities know there stuff,I understand your frustations, but the Cummins engine is strong, and one bad apple dont make the hole bushell bad;)

Brother in Law and I lived 200 miles apart and we both had CTDs.

The Cummins dealer near him would hardly give him the time of day; I went in with him one day to buy some "Premium Blue" and it was as if we were invisible! Rotten service.

On the other hand the one near me--Medford Oregon--could not have treated me better had the manager been my own brother. They were great in every way.

No matter how a company tries, they are at the mercy of the individuals at a particular shop. Not all will be good at the same time.

Back when I had a Ford, I was 300 miles from home with a load of pack mules behind heading Elk hunting when I had a problem and stopped at a Ford dealer; they could not have robbed me anymore decisively had they used a gun. They could see I was in a bind and when I questioned the bill (over $200 labor when I had been there well under an hour, the manager said well, you can pay or you can leave the truck here, and we can call the local police if there is a problem.

The Rocky Mountain Cummins shop in Billings has always treated me good. I've never had to do any repairs, but its a good place to get filters, mudflaps, and doodaws at a better price than Dodge. Plus, I can order over the phone.

Every spring they host a large Cummins get together for RV and Dodge CTDs with factory reps, food, and drink. I know if I did need repairs I would take it there before Dodge unless it was a warranty issue.

Your problem is not with the Cummins engine, it's with the service department. Doesn't make any difference if it is a Dodge dealer or a Cummins repair facility. You're at the mercy of their schedule and the "real" skills of whoever works on it. You use your Ram for commercial towing so you already know how good the engine is. As for me... I sure hope Dodge never switches to a "BENZ" motor... ;)

The pulley sheared off around the bolts and they stayed on the crank. It doesn't look like it caused any other damage to the truck, probably because I was going under 10mph when it happened and it just scooted out from under the truck. I love the way the truck runs and works normally but it just wasn't a problem I thought I should have at 74k miles... I've cooled of a little but I'm still not happy about the whole thing. And it's not like I can just take it to another cummins dealer... It's the only one in the state...

I've been very impressed with the Cummins facility in San Leandro, CA. They have some great people in the technical support department that always seem to more than happy to discuss my concerns and issues. The parts department can get busy at times but once you get to one of the parts people they work with you until you're satisfied.

I agree with the others, service can vary quite a bit from one location to another. It's too bad you don't have an alternate Cummins service center to fall back on. One thing that can help is to contact their customer service hotline and let them know how you were treated. Most companies take customer satisfaction seriously and will follow up on complaints.
