DaimlerChrysler Backtracks, Says Cummins To Remain Engine Supplier
Source: Diesel Progress

One day after DaimlerChrylser Chairman Juergen Schrempp said in an interview that the automaker planned to use a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine in the Dodge Ram pickup, the company backtracked and said that Cummins would remain the diesel engine supplier for the Ram.
"I spoke to (DaimlerChrysler president) Jim Holden last night in Auburn Hills, who confirmed that Cummins would remain the diesel engine option in its Dodge Ram pickup truck,'' Tim Solso, Cummins chairman and chief executive, said in a news release.

Schrempp said in an interview with Automotive News that the DaimlerChrylser would replace the Cummins B series diesel with the Mercedes-Benz 906 series engine as part of an effort to cut costs. That would have been very bad news for Cummins, which sells more than $1 billion in Ram engines each year to DC.

But a DaimlerChrysler spokesman confirmed that Cummins had been told it will remain the diesel engine supplier for the trucks. A Mercedes engine would be used only if DaimlerChrysler were to decide to build a medium-duty truck, which is larger than the light-duty Ram pickup, the spokesman.

Well, first off, Jim Holden is no longer president of Chrysler...

And I've read in truck industry news that the
Cummins contract with DC is good only through the '04 model year.

Chrysler now owns Detroit Diesel also- good for medium truck use.
Chrysler also entered into a strategic alliance with Caterpillar diesel for the medium market. Apparently Cat has state of the art injection systems to meet '07 emissions rules.

So who knows which way DC will jump at the end of '04??

I have contemplated this situation for quite some time now. Here is what I would like. A full 4 door with a 300 ISB in 02 or 03. If we can get that then they can use all the kraut grinders they want to. If I can't get that, I like what I have just fine... ... ...

Thats the truck i have been waiting for. A new 2003 4door ram 2500. Cummins HO 6spd, 4x4 short bed, Lightdriftwood, Sport. SWEET!

I can't see how the MB engine would be "saving money" I has to cost at least as much, if not more (much more) then the Cummins. But it could be good a way to move money from our USA pockets to there German Pockets!

I ran across this story in the july 2000
issue of Popular Mechanics. I'll try to
print it word for word.
Dodge sells about one in five Ram pickup
trucks with diesel engines, specifically a
Cummins 5. 9-liter turbocharged six cylinder.
but that will change when the 2003 model
Ram pickup is introduced in 2002. then
Dodge Rams will use a six cylinder
turbocharged Diesel built by Mercedes-Benz
in Germany. the Mercedes engine is expected to be as large as 6. 4 liters and will
develop 200-plus horsepower. this will be
a substantial cost saver for Daimler Chrysler.
I don't know where PM got the information,
but this was in the july 2000 issue pg. 48
personally I sure like my cummins, but a
inline Mercedes 6 might not be all that bad.

If not Cummins, i hope they go with Detroit or Cat. I will NEVER buy a Mercedes diesel. Can you imagine how much parts will cost!.

My current plan is to wait untill the information on the 2003 2500 is finally released. If they do not offer the Cummins, my plan is to order a 2002 model before the cut off date!!!

Also guys,
The new design rams have independant front suspension with Aluminum A-arms!!! The front suspension looks like it will be Torsion bar, but not sure.
Personally, I am going to keep this 2001 until I have to restore and rebuild it and go another 550k. this is the best design so far. Chrysler is trying to appease the car ride people that want a truck too!!
Keep your solid dana 60's (or dana 44 as your case may apply... . )with coil over's
this is my keeper #ad

I could never understand why GM would continue to offer an IFS front end in their so called "heavy duty" trucks. Personally, I believe durability is more important that ride quality. If DC ever goes with an IFS front end on their diesel powered truck, I'm just not going to buy it. I'll just keep my
2000 model.

I'm keeping my Cummins. Accidents or acts of God notwithstanding, I plan on rebuilding when this engine gives up the ghost. I'm very happy with this truck. My wife definitely needs a 4x4 2500, though. I'm thinking about looking into an undervalved #ad
truck for her. Hey, might as well have the best of both worlds, eh? #ad

I'm up in air on this one. I definately love my cummins and the bolt ons and serviceability are second to none as is the cost of owning one but I was watching extreme machines on the learning channel and truck racing in europe is very popular. The MB trucks have an outstanding reputation in that circle and those things are very fast. The thing they won't tell you over here is what it would cost you if you could even get the parts (probably waaaay tooo Hiiigh). So I'd probably never buy one cause I'm waaaay toooo cheeeeaaap. #ad

2003 is toos oon for me even if they do keep the solid axle and Cummins. I plan on keepin' this truck 10 years or more depending on how the body holds up. Have no worries on the engine. so far, (knock on wood) have not had a big problem in 10K miles cept for a trip computer glitch on the overhead. plan on lifting a few inches later on after body warranty runs out and bigger tires

2003 or 2004 could be good for me IF they get rid of the VP44, keep the Cummins, have a crew cab, and the 4x4 doesn't sit any higher than the current truck. I hope 2003 brings the new HD3500 so by 2004 I can buy year two of the new style.

Then I can turn the 98 into my commuter... . #ad
