In my neck of the woods I see more 7. 3's than any other diesel truck. I think I remember reading that the 7. 3 had the most market share. Just in my neighborhood there are five. I was wondering how the HO stacks up against the 7. 3.

Any experiences like the thread on the HEMI? I've heard that the 7. 3 can be pretty fast when bombed.

All the experience that I have with the 7. 3 was the 175,000 miles on my 99 work truck truck. My HO is a 2001 both six speeds of course. In my opinion the 7. 3 is quite comparable. Very good low end torque for a v8 and was an extremely reliable and powerful engine. The 6. 0 in my new work truck is a whole nother banana. It has about as much low end torque as a Kawasaki Ninja. If they offered both engines as an option and I was buying a new Ford I would buy the 7. 3 in a hearbeat. Needless to say neither of them please me like my bone stock HO does.

A friend of mine has a bombed Stroker. Stacked chips ball bearing turbo 4" exhaust stage 3 extrude honed injectors. It runs really well, but you dont see any of them pushing any serious hp. Wonder what the top hp you can get out of them?

I knew it had a good reputation. I bet the size wasn't manageable with all the EPA requirements. Too bad. I looked on the Furd website and found some specs on the 7. 3. In the auto it cranks out 250hp and 505 lbs ft. and the manual transmission's able to crank out 275 hp and 520 lbs ft. So I guess I have nothing to worry about if I come up against one.

The 7. 3's (and v-8's in general) do have somewhat of an RPM advantage over the CTD but this has narrowed quite a bit with the 3gen's I would think. Everyone I know who has a late model 7. 3 really likes it overall but I don't think they get as good a fuel mileage as the CTD's. Oh!-----and let's not forget the now famous connecting rod picture!!

I had a 1996 7. 3 PSD and hated it. Obviously it doesn't have as bad a reputation as the 6. 0l does, but it sure didn't impress me. Between cavity corrosion, cackle and HEUI injectors, I don't think the 7. 3 PSD is even in the same book as the Cummins, much less on the same page.

It is not really comparing apples to apples but I have a 1993 7. 3 f350 that is the most gutless truck I have ever been in! It used a quart of oil every 1,000 miles from the time it was new! Dealer said that is normal and would do nothing about it. I also had a 92 f250 that was a very good truck. It's only problem was that it was the last year before the serpentine belt and it would periodically throw one belt which immediately take out the others! Like I said not really comparing apples to apples but both of my dodges are far superior trucks! I always wanted a powerstroke crewcab but not any more! The 3rd gen dodge is a super truck!

Wouldn;t the 7. 3 PS be better compared to the SO cummins? Previous to the 3rd gens... (I may be wrong) there was only 1 cummins offered each model year... not an SO with the HO option (or whatever).

If I am right... I still see not much comparison between a PS and cummins... except they are both diesels.

If I am wrong. . someone please school me.

Well I still have an 01 and I like it... My 04 cummins is on order not to replace it but to add to it:D The ford is fine as a truck. . but... It does have some problems too... too many for a 40k truck... IMHO. I had a taste of a 98 cummins and missed it alot:) SO... . against my wifes ok... I ordered one:D I now I find out that its not going to be ready until march or later:mad: I am not happy!

XJSuperman,

FWIW, the HO (ETH) was offered in '01, '02, '03 and '04. Prior to 2001 there was only one choice, and that was the engine referred to as the SO (ETC) in later years. Of course after the 2004. 5 ETH (called a "600" rather than a HO for marketing reasons) was released and was able to be 50 state legal, the ETC was discontinued. In reality then, they only make HO's anymore.
