I have what I consider to be a pretty cool idea for a Cummins Conversion. I am going to take the cab of a 1949 Chevy 3/4 ton and put in on the frame and drivetrain of a First gen 1 ton. I got the 49 chevy for free and am working on acquiring a first gen truck. I have taken a ton of measurements on the first gens, just need to measure the 49 to see if I can make it work. I just can't help but smile thinking about driving around in a cummins powered 49 chevy. What do y'all think? Am I crazy?

I drove '54 Chevy trucks for 12 years or so. First one got stolen!

The 54 is basically the same bodystyle as the '49. This sounds really cool!

If you need restoration parts, I found Jim Carter Antique truck parts, in Independence, Mo. to be Fair, reasonably quick and they have very good parts.

Cummins/49 Chevy Am I crazy?

Of course. But that is a plus not a minus. I have seen some super sharp trucks that model. It will be even nicer with the Cummins. I am thinking that it will be a little tight front to back in the engine compartment but some careful triming/inside bulge on the firewall will resolve that.

I have a 57 Dodge that i was thinking about dropping a cummins in until i saw how little room the 315 has. I guess i'll settle for a 440.

My first truck was a 51 chevy that my dad and I rebuilt from the ground up!! and as much as I liked the stovebolt6 the Cummins will do your 49 justice!!! keep us posted!!!

Thanks for the encouraging words guys. Now I really want to do the swap. Just trying to scrape up enough pennies to buy the first gen I am looking at. Banzai, you make a good suggestion, I will definitely look at that possibility. This project is gonna take me a while, so nobody hold their breath. I will keep y'all up to date as this conversion progesses.

Go for the 49 Chev Conversion

It will be a fun project, head turner and a fun driver. I am wrapping up my conversion on a 1943 Dodge Carryall. Cummins 4BTA, NV-4500 married to a NP-205 T case. Saginaw Power Steering, disk brakes and much more.

Make it look stock, and pull like a locomotive on the inside.

In a month or so I am going to start another conversion on a 1956 Power Wagon, same engine/drive line as above but with the addition a swivel joint behind the cab for frame articulation.

These Swivel Frames were available in the mid 50's.

Sounds like a great idea. Crazy? heck yeah yer crazy, but most of us conversion guys are, I know I am. Shoot if I lived closer i'd even help. Would look great in all black and crome with early nostalgic cummins badges on the doors. Would be a sweet cruiser. Good Luck! Please update us often and LOTS of pics.

Oh, this should be sweet..... go for it.

I LOVE the sound of a Cummins. My plan for an old vehicle conversion... . Instead of a conversion, was thinking of a killer sound system with some of the speakers exiting from under the wheelwells and hood with a continuous CD of engine sound playing... . choices of idleing and acceleration. My rap music.

WM-300, that carry-all is looking sweet, sure has gone through a big change since you started it. Someday I'll have to swing up there and get a good look at it.

A local tractor dealer has a mid-60's Dodge W-500??? all wheel peel, I was thinking that would be a cool conversion, just wish I has some disposable income.

Your welcome to come up. Give me about a month to finish it. I am running straight out, I have 61 days and it MUST be ready to load on my trailer for the National Power Wagon Rally in Fairfield, Iowa. I am now doing the doors, getting ready to paint them, then glass, seat belts and a few small things. Send me a PM about the end of the month and we will set it up.
