Hi Steven. I am looking to install a cummins in my Bus/Coach and am thinking the M11 might be the way to go. I need dementions to see if it will work. There seems to be a lot of them out there. This is the start of a learning curve about what might work in my bus. Thanks Mitchell.

what do you need specifically, I can probably find it. are you repowering? what year is it? mechanical m11 or ism? if you are considering that also look at the isl. available in 400hp very similar dimensions

This is a 40' MCI that will weigh about 36,000# wet. The problem is with how long I can go. It now has an 8V71. I am a Cummins fan and want to repower with same. I will be towing a trailer that will be around 10,000#. I know of a guy who says he installed a 5. 9 and a 6 speed Allison in one and he says it works great. He also says he gets 13 to 13 mpg on the flats. I question weather this little engine will handle this very long. I am open to suggestions and a computer controlled engine is OK with me. I know they are using the 60 series Detroit but they are too long and high. Besides I want a Cummins. Thanks Mitchell

I could probably measure one in a truck for you if rough measurements would work. I will have to wait until one comes through the shop though. Dunno if manual has that info or not, but I will check.

46,000# would be alil much for a 5. 9 I think. I'd stay away from the older mechanical Ls, unless your going with an auto, their very tight in the RPM band to shift (300 RPM window). I'd look at a 350hp M11, I heard issues of the ones cranking out 400+.

OK cuss me for this... ...

AN 8V71??!!!! 568 2-stroke cubes! The right guy can massage that thing into LOTS of HP. Thier not very tourqy though and they spin pretty fast, but I personaly kinda like those ol' driptroits... ... hee hee

Edit: maybe you should repower. Cram an 8V92 in with quad turbos. I saw that once-- it was rediculous and confusing, but made thousands of ponies Oo.

Cooling the 2 stroke detroits are the problem in a bus. The 4 stroke is a lot easer to cool and also gets better fuel economy. It is not about the HP. (Which is ok) but more about the smoke when they fire up when cold, and the oil drips including the air box drains. If I am in a nice RV park people don't look too kindly on that sort of thing. Besides I like these type of projects. Thanks Mitchell

I can see the cooling issues..... and the above exaple i think only ran a very short time before rebuild.

Detriots dont have to slobber the way alot do, and later models drain the airbox into the oil pan. As for the smoke, well that lets you know who the REAL diesel heads are.

But do understand the nice rv park reference.

And you'll probly never find me there! :)

I would look at an isl. the b is a little to small for that, it would move it but not well or to good mileage. the isl is probably the best rv engie out. havent had any major problems with them. and available in 400hp. thats what I would say anyway

Back in 01 and 02 Tiffin Motorcoach out of Red Bay, AL used a Freightliner Chassis with ISM's in there 40' class A motorhomes. I believe the model was a Tiffin Zephyr. I do know that they used a side mount radiator to accomodate for the engine. You might try calling Tiffin and getting the specs on that particular model. It may be of some help.

B=5. 9 liters.

C=8. 3 liters

L=8. 7liters - Looks a lot like a C(the L used to be 10 liters - older version of M11)

M=11 liters

N=14 liters

X=15 liters

K=19 to 78 liters, depending on number of cylinders.

If you can fit the ISM, I would go for it. I had a 500hp ISM in a 45' coach and it was amazing. It would yield 7-9mpg load pending, and had the power to pull steep grades at high elevations. The install was with a sidemount radiator with and electronic fan for cooling. The coach weighed 42k wet, plus I always had a 5000lb. vehicle in tow.
