I took my truck in today to an authorized Cummins repair facility to have the KDP dealt with. The shop foreman insisted that I was wasting my money to have it fixed and that the 1st gen trucks do not have an issue with the KDP coming loose. He went on to say that the case was tapered at the end of the hole preventing the pin from falling out. I still told him to tab it.

After the case was open, the mechanic told me that everything was tight, the pin was seated, and like he told me, it wouldn't have fallen out regardless due to the design of the case.

So now I have a tab over the pin, lock tight on my bolts and $400 less in my pockets. Was this a necessary a repair??

This shop is reputable..... they do all the servicing for the buses and truck lines here in Victoria and are a Cummins dealer.

Please comment... ... you get a different answer from everyone you talk to about this problem with 1st gens.

Cheers

Let's see, I have 400 dollars in my left hand for preventive maintenance. I have 2800 dollars in my right hand in case the dowel pin goes catastrophic. Seems like a no brainer to me. Besides, you still have the bolt issue taken care of as well. The tab had to be a minute part of the total. I am sure you did the right thing. Peace of mind has to be of some value. Glen

all i gotta say that mechanic is misinformed.

ive personally seen 2 1st gen kdp's fall out,,,,,,,,well,,the results of them falling out. not good. ive also seen the results of a bolt falling out. very bad deal. others on the tdr have had the same happen to them. some w/ as little as 60,000 miles on em. there is also some with over a million miles on em that havent fallen out. so how much do ya like to gamble????????????? 400 bucks,,,,,,,2800 bucks,,,,,,,or as one guy was quoted when the bolt fell out 7,000 bucks to fix.

preventative maintenance is good

Oo.

We are doing this the hard way, see if he will sign an agreement to fix whatever the pin or bolt breaks when it falls out for free! :-laf :-laf I'll bet he is not a player. Glen

Obviously that mechanic hasn't seem some of the pics that have been posted here of dowel pin failure. my 92 is going under the knife ASAP for this fix, i drive it every day to work since picking it up, does it bother me to know that it could come out at any time you dang straight it does, i try not to think about it and in hopes that i will get to it before it gets me.

It was money well spent. As the others pointed out, you're more likely to have a bolt fall out in a first gen than the KDP, but you don't have to worry about either now.

What he said.

My pin had moved about 1/4" when i checked it. Case500D's had moved a little less. CGather's had moved some. I am not sure how much because Greenleaf did his while I was installing gages. TugboatPhils had moved if I remember right.

All of us had loose cam retainer bolts.

So you didn't waste one red cent. Its money well spent. IMHO

KDP Fell Out

Gardiner,

You did not waste 1 red cent. I am one of the unlucky few that had it come out. Mine came out in December, I posted a discussion on it. Cracked from cover. When it was all said and done it cost about $1700. The $400 is good insurance.

Wow

Who would have thunk that the Cummins Techs don't subscribe to this web site... ... ... .....

Go figure huh??

He'd probaby tell you that a VE pumped engine won't make over 200 hp on a good day.

In comparison, I recently sent a P-Pump to an injection shop that didn't know you could turn up a VE pump much past 160 hp. :-laf

GL

$400 or $4000

It is a maddening thing to be following a 1st gen. at 75 mph when the pin drops, the oil pump gear shatters, the lack of oil scores the 5 cylinder bad and the 6th worse. It is amazing to see how much smoke the blow by can make in such a short period of time.

Now, the guy in the VW behind me probably was not thinking this but he certainly was experiencing it! I still have the #6 piston but have spent $4000 and many hours replacing my engine. Just sharing my experience with it.

Gardiner,

What the mechanic told you was like a doctor saying, "I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. "

"Of course not, Doc. You ain't me!!"

Philip was correct. My pin had backed out a small amount, but the bolts were all loose. Even though it seems like a hefty bill to pay, others have attested that the worst case can cost a whole lot more.

$400 does sound like cheap insurance now that I have read the cost of ignorance/circumstance.

I need to address the KDP on my truck and plan on doing it myself. Could someone post or PM any parts that would be required to complete the task. Thanks.
