All sounds good so far! I especially like the "Better to beg for foriveness than to ask for permission. " line. This may just be the best way to go. Thanks for all the input. I will let everyone know how I end up after ordering.

The math is indisputable. You can expect to get 20 MPG under normal driving conditions (I can get up to 24 MPG with my truck). Comparable gassers are lucky to get 12 MPG. Spread out over 100,000 miles you save 3333 gallons of fuel. At current prices, that's over $5000 saved (more than the cost of the Cummins option).

The other benefits have mostly been mentioned. Another consideration is the cost and ease to upgrade the power/torque of the Cummins compared to a gasser. It's actually laughable when you think of what you have to do to a gasser to get the same performance increases you can get from a Cummins with a $300 torque plate (12 valve) or the boxes the overvalved ones put on their engines to excite their little teeny electrons. Buy yourself some diesel fumes aftershave and use it! #ad

Hey Jeepit,
Do you tow a trailer? That's what it took for me. An enclosed snowmobile trailer into a big headwind max speed: 53 mph @ 6 mpg (overdrive locked out and no cruise of course). Now I roll it up to 80, set the cruise and pull 12 mpg (and all the hills I've found on the interstates in WI)!

I working on putting together a local chapter, interested?

Extreme 1, I pull trailer with ,of course, a jeep on it total of 5000ilbs. Agianst the wind is a chore with 7 to 8 mpg. On a good day about 9to10. I am not that cocerned with mileage as I am with power. I love the truck not the engine. If I could only do a transplant. Well, I like the smell of a new truck anyway. Where are you located in Wisconsin. ?

Extreme 1, I guess I didn't read your whole message. I may be interested in a local chapter depending on distance involved.

Extreme1 & Jeepit: I'd be intrested in a local chapter, although I'm pretty busy most of the time. (I'm in central WI)

Just got back from South Dakota pulling Jeep on trailer. 9 miles to the gallon and no power with the 360. Maybe now is the time to set the hook.

jeepit;

If there is one thing I have learned, it is to NOT try to convince your wife that YOU need a new truck.
It might work this time, but the next time, you will be screwed out of luck.

Here is that I found works REALLY well to get your new things, and most of all, it's a BETTER way, and much less deviant.

1) Your number one goal should NOT be convincing her that YOU want it, but you should focus on getting HER to want the new truck. Since what THEY want is OK, it absolutely is the best way to go #ad

You have to make sure you make the "promotional" material VERY available to her in places where she eventually gets bored and reads something for the sake of it.

2) Ask other CUMMINS owners about how pleased they are with their mileage and towing ability WITH YOUR WIFE PRESENT. This way, it's not just YOUR story. She will think for herself in this way, and start thinking that this really is the way to go.

3) Have her help you call up dealers looking for older USED Dodge Cummins. Since they usually don't exist (always sold out), the salesman will usually say things like "whenever we get one in here, they're gone within a week". A powerful message from someone OTHER than yourself.

4) DON'T RUSH!!!! If there is ever one thing to foil your plans of a new truck, it's to rush things! In all fairness, it's her investment also. This is why I opt for the above plan. Give her time to gradually LEARN about them, then after some time using the above points, she will actually start to WANT the truck.

I always thought that just trying to cram what we want down our wives throat usually ends up in argument and a BIGGER problem each "next time".

My line of thinking is that it is her investment just as much as mine, so for a big ticket item like this, I would prefer her to actually want what she is buying. I just think it lays the ground for better teamwork, and you will BOTH enjoy the purchase that much more.

My . 02

Like Shawn said, it needs to be her idea too. I just went through this and it took 2 yrs of working the ol' hide in order to make it happen. I do have a tendency to go through vehicles, so my history wasn't good here. But, here's what I did:

Start quizzing her on the visual differences between the dodge gas vs diesel. (Wow! Look how big that exaust pipe is!!) My wife could tell and thought it fun to I. D. the trucks going down the road.

Start with why you would never own a cowardstroke and why it's engine is not even in the same class as the cummins

Pull over and lift the hood to hear a mysterious 'sound' while in rush hour traffic or when your both in a hurry going somewhere. The babes just want it to run, no questions asked. If you're not sure what the problem is, she'll be very concerned.

Ask to take her vehicle to work because you haven't 'found' the problem with yours.

Start tapping on the guage cluster and yelling, " Oh S--T!!!" a couple of times a month.

Tell her you talked to a fireman who sees alot of accidents with all kinds of vehicles and that you found it interesting that you have a better chance of walking away from a nasty grinder if your vehicle is larger and weighs about 8,000 lbs. (true story)

Ask her what color she likes best in the Dodge truck line.

It worked for me, and after we broke down in the Ford and had to walk 1 mile to the next house at night, she was ready to give the green light for any new vehicle. (That fuel tank switch is a great disabling device!)
Good luck!

A few asumptions here but this should get her attention...
First the Gasser 200,000 Miles @ 10MPG= 20,000 gallons @ 1. 40 Per Gallon=$28,000. 00
Now the Mighty Cummins 200,000 Miles @ 18MPG= 11,111 Gallons @ 1. 40=$15,555. 00.
This saves you $12,445. 00 over 200,000 miles. By the way you'll need to by a new gasser now and your old one isn't worth SQUAT!

Time to check in and I am making some prgress. I have gone to 2 dealers to drive 3/4 ton cummins. All were striped down models with few options on and no HO engine. Only comment from my wife so far as been,"maybe you are making more $ than I thouhgt".

JUST CUT HER OFF MAN!! #ad

Actually . . I bought her a new car first . . Then she couldn't deny my request. #ad
