I have read posts of how Cummins part stores sell almost ALL parts cheaper then the Dodges Dealers, so... . I am wondering, can they also change the oil and filter for cheaper too? I would change my own but it's not that easy to have a drain pan, and all those goodies in the dorm. Dorm Mother just don't care for oil on her nice clean floors, and I have no tool box

Thanks,

AJB

I am sorta in the same boat as you; I have no time to change my own oil. I go to the local Valvoline oil change shop up the street from my office. I do, however, bring in my own fleetguard filters and coolant. They provide the Valvoline / Cummins Premium Blue 2000, greese, labor, and most importantly clean-up/disposal of the old fluid. An oil change runs me about $40. I know I could do it for less myself, but I just don't have the time. I am able to supervise all work which makes me feel better about letting someone else touch my truck. I know the guys and they are very professional. Someday when I am retired (LOL) I'll go back to changing my own fluid. Hope this helps.

A Cummins dealer will definatley do the oil change for you, but it will be more then an oil change place i would think. If anything, try and find a local reputable service station and work out a deal with the owner and tell him you will supply the oil and filter, he does the labor for like, say 20 bucks, thats reasonable

I had Cummins change the oil/filter,fuel filter and clean out the blow by bottle and the total charge was 138. 41. I know I can get it done cheaper somewhere else, but I know the service man and mechanic (mechanics do the oil changes) and I feel better with them doing the work as they usually check for other things for me.

Now that we are on the subject of Cummins Dealers, I can vent a little about Cummins Southern Plains in San Antonio. I took my 97 there for the first valve adjustment and they did a great job. Even had them change the coolant and the oil at the same time once. I usually do the oil myself. Cummins will do anything as long as it is engine related. They won't work on other parts of the truck. Rear end, transmission, etc. The only beef I ever had with them was they tightened the oil drain plug so damn tight I had to kick it off with my wrench the next time I changed oil. I managed to bend the pan a little but the plug still screwed in OK. I took it back to Cummins and *****ed and told the guy it seemed like someone used an impact wrench to put the plug on. He naturally denied that and just shock his head. They charged less for the services than the dealer did. Although, after I was the first 97 with the canister fuel filter he changed, he said he was going to charge more the next time and he did. It's been awhile so I can't remember exactly how much, but still less than the dealer. I might have to retract my aggravation over the overtightened oil drain plug since I have been reading that there are different torque specs for the plug, so just maybe they had the wrong spec. I do like there work though, they always seemed to clean up after themselves, which is more than the dealers do. :)

After reading stories about getting the filter off for the first oil change, I went to Jiffy Lube... brought my own Fleetguard and Delo and watched them bust their knuckles getting it off. They carried the Delo, but it was a lot more expensive that the case I bought at Walmart.

I think they charged me $20 for the change.

I am lucky I guess. I usually do my own then it takes less than 5 minutes to take it to the recycles center when my 5 gallon cans get full. I once paid 27. 00 for an oil change, thought that was on the steep side. Would be worth 18-20 to get the truck in the air real good and check all over for leakd and stuff one can't see while just on ramps in the driveway. I got two oil filters and a fuel filter delivered for 39. 00 from Geno's.

My experience is that it's more expensive to have the oil changed at the Cummins shop vs. Dodge. I have brought my CTD into Cummins for service a couple of times and have been completly satisfied, which I can't say the same for the Dodge dealer. I'll usually go to Cummins when I need a new fuel filter, blow by bottle taken care of along with oil/filter/lube. I wish I had the time to do some of the services myself. You may spend more at the Cummins shop for some services, but I trust them more. My 2 cents.

Cummins Service

Yes they will do it for a price. Cummins NW sent out coupons for service and their oil/filter change was on special for $69 (If I remember correctly) with regular pricing around $90.

$$$ for service

I cannot belive that it costs that much to get an oil and filter changed. Guess I'll try the Jiffy Lube down the stree from the dorm.

I guess the price difference comes for the service that is much better, and trusted too probly.

I do it myself, about 25 buck in material.

At least I know the filter was filled, tightened, the drain bolt is torqued right and not stripped...

While I'm under there draining oil I grease everything, almost 3 years now, lots of off road and towing off road and the track bar is still fine.

That should be another poll... how many times a year do you grease your track bar fittings and front end... and how long did you get out of your track bar(s).

I figure it's an easy 20 - 30 minutes of going over the truck and bonding with it..... spent all that money. . cant trust it to some one else... It's funny how slippery the corner is near our local Jiff Lube:confused:

Not a place I want to visit.

I known how much you guys are going to hate to here this but I have three Dodge Cummins trucks, mine and two in the company.

The 96's have 176k and 135K on them. Every Oil Change on those two trucks have been done at Walmart for 28 dols and some loose change. My truck gets it there as well. Cummins and

DM still own the engine until 100k. They all use Rotella T. We have a 3406 in the fleet in a Kenworth Cab over, a 3208 in a Ford

F7000 Crane Truck (350,000 Miles) and a 6V-71 Air compressor which run on Rotella. Never no problems. Of couse Wal-mart does not do the big stuff.

The point is why spend all that money for a filter, which might merritt the price and 65 dols per hour labor to change it when it can get done the same for far less money. You can do 4 changes at Wal-Mart for the price of one at the Cummins dealer.

I've been driven Diesel vehicles of my own since 78 using Fram Filters and Penzoil 30HD up until I started using Rotella in my

93 Ford Crew Cab 7. 3 when it started using 2 quarts between changes. Switched to Rotella and after 10 months the oil comsumption was down to 1/2-3/4 quart between changes.

Don't bang on me to hard now for using a fram filter. I've read all that stuff as well.

Happy Motoring !

my local cummins place

they quoted me "around $85" broke it down this way...

filter-$7and change

oil-about $25

labor- $85/hr.

all this plus tax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used WalMart when we were passing through Pocatello Idaho on our trip down south. The price was great, and they used Rotella T, but they used a cheap filter, possibly a Fram but I really can't remember.

Nice wonderful folks that they were, they also rotated my tires and decided to bust up two of my hub caps for some reason (big cracks and chips like they used them for frisbees). Stupid me, I didn't even notice it until we were up in Montana on our way back to Alaska.

oil change

I guess I'm lucky.

The times I've taken my truck to Dodge tor an oil change I've been very happy with the service. I bring my own Delo and they use the oem filter and it costs about $22. 00.

Well, I guess I'm spoiled. I paid $168 up front for a "lifetime service agreement". It goes like this: I take the Mighty Beast to my dealer (Melton's in Claremore, OK) for a full oil, lube, fluids top off, undercarriage inspection (that I "help" with while it's up on the rack) and filter. They use Rotella-T and a Mopar filter. (Of course, I watch them closely. I'm getting to know the techs pretty well and they seem to take really good care of me. ) My total cost - the filter. $9. 27 after tax. I go in every 2,000-3,000 miles. I'm already ahead of the game money-wise, and my Mighty Beast has one heckuva long life yet to go. That $168 was a bargain!

Tulsa618 ,

Geez is that a darn good deal.

My sales guy at the dodge dealer, "tried" to but a service agreement into my deal but was told since it was the diesel he couldn't. After that he re-wrote the deal and knocked some dollars off the of the deal and it saved about 8 bucks for each payment.

A year later he wasn't there anymore
