Stock turbo VS. SPS62

1995 - more engine torque?

Might be old news to some, but this is a thread I have been following over at DTR. I thought some of you might be interested. There is a few arguers that post often, but read through all that the thread is pretty good.

Some good reading there. One of the DTR members here in Tri-Cities is having his '01 done right now and I'll get a chance to try it out soon

Allison

Vaughn - - - Anybody out there in TDR land know how to get ahold of Gabe 32? this conversion makes more sense than any thing I have ever heard about changing our transmissions.

I have considered doing this swap myself, but it gets expensive. The A1000 is a solid basis for building a performance transmission, and will go into a dodge with some enginuity (spelling?) If you plan on building a high tq/hp truck you will still need to change out the P. O. S 1 clutch converter (looks similar to the dodge converter), mod the valve body to raise line pressures, and I would say for anything over 600hp, I would upgrade the frictions, and steels. I have built an A1000 for my buddys duramax, and a 47re in my dodge, and I think they are equal performance wise. the only atvantage I see in the A1000 is the shear size of all the componets. You do not have to upgrade any of the shafts (although you can) to build it to handle power. The A1000 is also fully electronic, and needs either the GM harness and computer (has a tendincy to be finicky) or an after market unit from EMS engine management systems (about $1200. 00 with prefab harness). The EMS computer is cool because you can set it up with all the goodies: tow haul, mpg, and drag race maps can be programed in. You can also add paddle shifting :). To install the A1000, all you need is an engine adaptor to go from a cummins to a GM transmission (700r, turbo400, ect) there are a few companies that make this adaptor plate (about $450. 00) you will also have to mod the transmission tunnel ALOT because of the A1000 size, and make your own transmission cross member. I think the transfer case from your dodge bolts up (not absolutely positive), and custom drive shaft(s) will also be needed. This would be a cool swap, but for the 6 or 7K you will end up spending, a fully built full billet 47re gets it done for way less!

I see That Gabe32 gets his TCM set up by Brayden. I sent a PM and Email to brayden last week but haven't heard back. I also tried to get on his web site but it said it was expired? Does anyone know how to reach him? I want to talk to him before I buy the transmission to do the swap.

I am definately going this route. Goerend makes a 3 disk converter, and with suncoast parts, it sounds like a solid setup. plus the GM 261 transfer case is stronger than the dodge case and they said its needed because of a sensor in the tailshaft. from what I have read, you need an SAE #3 bellhousing, different starter and flexplate, trans, computer, transfer case and some new driveshafts, but he says they are doing the conversion with all those parts for around 6-7k. and thats with a Stage 3 or 4 trans, I forget which.

anyone have a link to the EMS website so I can read about their computer? is it a stand alone?

There have been mechanical Allison trannies behind B series cummins for many years in small trucks and busses I would have to check my books to see what model. I think it would be a lot better transmission and a lot cheaper to swap into a pickup also just add a gear venders overdrive unit to it. From what I have read and seen first hand, As stated above a built 47re or 48re are just as good or better due to less $$$. The stock A1000 have just as high a failure rate as the stock dodge trannies when adding performance mods.

just my . 02
