New Military Class 8 Tractors

Chevy's New Cruze With 50 MPG Turbo Diesel?

Not sure if anyone has seen this but I went by Cummins Midsouth today and noticed flyers for the Cummins Power Club.

It's a membership for anyone with Onan generators, Cummins powered RVs or Cummins powered Ram trucks. $19. 95/year and it gives you 10% off of Cummins genuine parts and discounts on labor.

Not too shabby.

The labor part of the deal makes you wonder... I thought Cummins wouldn't touch our trucks due to their agreement with Chrysler.

I'll be signing up!

I think they will repair them on your dime but not under the Chrysler warranty.

Sam

That is exactly right.

They are just as happy to wrench on our engines as anybodys.

Where people get confused is the warranty aspect.

Cummins sells the engines to Dodge without any warranty coverage. The 5 year / 100,000mile engine coverage on our trucks is offered by Dodge, not Cummins.

Therefore if a Cummins dealer does a warranty repair on your engine he will not be reimbursed by Cummins for the parts and labor as that engine has no warranty coverage as far as Cummins is concerned.

In turn Dodge will not reimburse the Cummins dealer for the warranty repairs because it was not performed by a Dodge Cummins Certified Dealer or authorized by Star.

So that is why the Cummins dealers tell you when you show up looking for warranty repairs on your Dodge "We can fix it but you will have to pay us!"

Does that help explain it??

Mike. :)

I don't believe Cummins dealers are capable of diagnosis if use of computer software is required because our ECM programming is unique to Dodge Ram and the Cummins engines installed in our Rams.

My understanding is taht a Cummins dealer canno plug our trucks in to a dealer service department computer like a Dodge dealer can.

Interesting Statement Harvey, thanks for bringing that up.

Made me curious as I just hate to post something that is not correct and will adjust if needed so I just called the Service Department at Cummins Northeast.

He tells me that he can only use the Cummins Insite software up to 2004 model trucks. Insite requires the three pin Deutz connector that resides right beside the intake horn for communication.

For 2005 and up trucks he purchased a $400. 00 Mac scan tool for his shop so that he can get the codes and either repair or advise the customer as to the best course of action. If his Dodge traffic were to increase then he would invest in a better tool. Right now it serves his needs.

That means they can still do about all of it, the issue would be getting a new ECM loaded (in that event he either sends it out to a Dodge dealer for programming or to the local independant Diesel shop here in Bangor) or a code that involved PCM issues (trip to the dealer or to someone with a better diagnostic tool than he has for sure).

So it will depend on the level of interest and motivation at any particular Cummins dealership. They can do most of it if so inclined.

Even if you had a nasty code that they couldn't do, it still leaves all hard parts such as turbo, water pump, idlers and pulleys, oil leaks, trany cooler, etc. open for repair and you will get ReCon warranty that is covered by any Cummins location for the parts that they do replace.

Plus, dare I say, Genuine Cummins Parts.

Thanks, Mike. That is more than we knew before your post.

I guess that means they also could not run the Dodge dealer diagnostics like "cylinder contribution test" that can be helpful to identify and diagnose performance issues.

I think your comment about level of interest and motivation is probably the key.

I would usually prefer to buy parts from a Cummins dealer (or you) and in some cases like a break down away from home, have a Cummins dealer perform the repairs.

I can understand about the warranty work.

But at Cummins Midsouth about a year ago, I was asking them about doing work to my old truck ('97) if I needed something done.

They said that due to their arrangement with Chrysler, they wouldn't/couldn't do any work to a Ram. Considering my 97 was about 10 years out of warranty I don't think that had anything to do with it.

They were trying to tell you that they didn't want to work on your truck. Having worked at a medium and heavy duty truck dealer for 20+ years, I understand why they don't want to work on pickups.

The Cummins Power Club has the most appeal to Cummins powered motorhome owners and usually diesel motorhomes are equipped with diesel powered Cummins Onan generators.
