Happy New Year!

Just got back from Baja. I was wondering how the 4x4 Dodge Cummins would work off road hauling 2000 lbs of camper and supplys. I was very happy with the performance! As soon as I got off the highway I let all the air out of the air bags and dropped the tire pressure (Michelin 285 M/S) till all the side walls had a nice fat bulge (about 40 lbs). I am glad I did not have a rear sway bar as I needed all the articulation I could get in the rear in a couple of spots. The Roadmasters worked great off road, no wheel hop at all. The limited slip worked great, I could hear it engage climbing hills and in the sand. One wheel would start to spin and then both tires would hook up. The highlights where the Dodge Cummins really shined - 1) I had to get off of a black top road under construction and climb up a very steep 3 foot embankment with holes and ruts. I put it in 4 lo and 1st gear (6 speed) and crawled up it no problem. The local who went up in front of us was in a 2wd older Nissan pickup with no load and took 3 tries to make it... 2) A very steep rutted 100 yard climb up a hill side. 2nd gear in 4 lo, no problem, glad I had the rear posi and no sway bar... 3) Going back down the same steep hill side - 4 low + 1st gear idled down it easy as pie

The crawl ratio in 4 low and 1st gear on the 6 speed is incredible. I could have gotten out, took a leak and the truck would have been about 5 feet further down the hill

4)In the sandy sections the torque of the Cummins was great to have and the limited slip worked perfect. Kept it in 4 low and 3rd or 4th gear and powered on through. 5)The coolest part was how frightened the wife was at the beginning of the off road stuff. By the time we were done she was no longer holding on with white knuckles and smiling when I told here she had earned her "off road wings"
