I just got my latest Cummins Turbo Diesel Newsletter e-mail. It seems to imply that we can put a RoadRelay 4 into our trucks. In the past, conventional wisdom was that this wouldn't work because of the proprietary Dodge ECU on our engines. Does anyone know if this has changed, or is the article just inadvertently vague so they didn't have to write "only for 2002 and older trucks"?

Article is here:

What has me curious is the fact that the link that Windscreen posted specifically says "Dodge Ram" in it.

"Edit" From the Cummins Road Relay faq:

"Should my RoadRelay 4 work with a non-Cummins engine?

As long as the diesel engine you have is electronically-controlled and its Electronic Control Module (ECM) broadcasts data over the public J1708/J1587 or J1939 data link, RoadRelay 4 will work with it. "

I'm not smart enough to know whether the data link follows any of those specs or not, maybe someone can chime in?

I must be blind, I read it again and didn't see Ram.

The final paragraph says
You can even use the system to track maintenance such as oil, tire, brake and fuel filter change intervals and keep a permanent log of services performed on your Dodge Ram.
(emphasis added by me)

 Geeze! I am going blind, thanks for helping out the handicapped. This is good news then cuz the Road relay in the past has not been for the Rams.

But when you go to the link that is in that same paragraph it implies these are only for the bigger trucks... I'm still learnin all this stuff so I have no clue.

the bold section is where we run into trouble... the j1939 connection we have is locked out by daimlerchrysler so normal truck engine scan tools like the RR4 and prolink and others can not communicate with our ecm's

I wonder if Marco can unlock it with his Smarty?

I did a ton of research about this a couple years ago. Basically found it's not possible (for the exact reason that Nick mentions). However, I've since heard that some aftermarket performance boxes use the 3-pin ECM data link connector, which implies that communications are not turned off completely. If I can snag an RR4 on the cheap I might be crazy enough to give it a try.

Here's the thread.

Very off thread, but can a third party market equipment that will "communicate with the ECM", even change it?? Legally that is, no doubt the ability is there.

I personally find it offensive that D. C can lock out the ecm to all but their own proprietary equipment! I have no problem with them putting in "red flags" so they know if someone has been playing with the programing. But I paid big money for my truck, I have modded to the point that my warranty is but a memory, and if I want to peruse and/or change my ecm it should be my at my sole discretion, EPA not withstanding. :D
