On the history of diagonally parted big ends, my copy of the 1965 edition of the Diesel and Gas Turbine Catalog shows nice drawings of Jenbacher (Austrian), Poyaud (French), Burmeister & Wain (Danish), and Sulzer (Swiss) "V" configuration engines and a Pegaso (Spanish) in-line engine with diagonally parted big ends that include serrations for locking the mating surfaces. There are Maybach (German), Baudouin (French), Nohab (Swedish), and Fairbanks Morse engines with diagonally parted big ends that same year but the drawings do not make clear whether the mating surfaces are serrated (ridged) for locking or just flat. I do not know if the only motive for that design is to allow pistons to be removed and replaced from above or if it also contributes to the control of the oil film in the big end.

When I toured the Cummins plant at the TDR nat'ls in '99, I held one of the rods and I was surprised to see that they say "Brazil" on them.

Vaughn,

Next time your out and about, stop at a Cummins shop and ask them if they have a bad rod that you could have. Tell them you want to bring it to one of your club meetings :D

Here is a picture of the newest connecting rod & Piston used in our trucks. The rod journel is not cut and machined any more, it is fractured!

I purchasd the Rod from my dealer friend for $38. 00+Tax. Piston is out of one of our buses in the School fleet.
