Maybe I'll yank that "G" off of my last name when I get married. . :D Then it would be Mr. and Mrs. Cummins. I guess then I'd have to buy another Dodge/Cummins For her. not a bad thing :D

Cummins unveils 2002-ready ISB diesel

Cummins Inc. has introduced the next generation of its six-cylinder ISB 5. 9L engine designed to meet the EPA's "pull ahead"emissions standards, which are scheduled to go into effect in October 2002. The new engine will be available in July of next year in ratings from 185 to 275 hp and torques from 420 to 660lb. ft. , and is targeted at a range of vehicle application, including trucks and buses.

"Cummins has designed this new B series engine to meet the needs of our coustomers," said John Malina, general manager, Cummins worldwide bus business. "For the bus market, we have focused on the safety and sociability aspects of the engine. Drivers will experience an engine that is 80 percent quieter than its predecessor, with the lowest NOx level of any diesel. "

To meet the 2. 5 g/bhp NOx and NMHC standard mandated by the consent decree between the EPA and heavy-duty on-highway engine builders, Cummins has made a number of changes to the engine, including the addition of a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The technology incorporates an EGR cooler developed in cooperation with Behr America, which works with an EGR valve and Holset turbocharger.

"Cleaner air through lower emissions is a major concern for Cummins and for our bus customers, especially those operating in urban environments," Malina said. "Considering the long life of a bus , often 10 or more years of operation, it's important that our customers get the cleanest and quietest technology available at the time of purchase," he said.

The engine also incorporates a version of the Cummins' HPI fuel system, developed in ccooperation with Scania. The high-pressure, common rail system is designed to provide more precise control of injection timing and fuel quantity over a wide range of engine speeds and loads. The system also has pilot injection capability for improved noise control.

Cummins said the fuel system has proven its reliability in Cummins engines in Europe since October 2000, when the Euro III version of the six-cylinder ISB engine went into production.

Higher horsepower ratings for the ISB --230 hp and above -- also use Holset variable geometry turbochargers, which are integrated into the engine's electronic controls and work by adjusting the nozzle size, thus changing the volume of the air flow, to improve the engine's performance. They allow for optimized air handling, which improves engine response at lower speeds. In addition to performance improvements, Cummins said the VGT equipped engines can provide up to a 2 percent improvement in fuel economy over the current models.

To reduce engine noise, Cummins moved the gear train to the rear of the engine. Placing the cam, fuel pump and accessory drives in the rear of the engine, togeather with the HPI fuel system, results in an engine that is 7dB(A) quiter than its predecessor, the company said.

Aside from the changes, the engine retains a number of features from its predecessors, including a 24-valve cylinder head and vertically centered fuel injectors.
