I saw this today while I was heading out of Denver... Does anyone know what this is about? I gave the guy a thumbs up and he honked and waved back. I don't have a C. B. installed yet so I couldn't ask him what's the story with the trailor.

Pretty cool looking though!

About four years or so ago, Cummins introduced its new heavy duty class 8 application Signature 600 engine, which is currently called the ISX. The prototypes were installed in about a half dozen chosen rigs which would pull those trailers, which were loaded to the max GVW, around the country to truck and trade shows. Designed to be a 600 hp max output, fuel economy leader, the signature 600 used a DOHC system and integrated a 6-cylinder selectable integrated engine brake system called intebrake. Upon having to bow to the new emissions requirements, the engines received cooled EGR, and the current maximum rating is 565 hp for the ISX in heavy duty trucks, 525 in fire trucks. I'd venture a guess that the trailer you saw was a fugitive from the new trailer logos.

Interesting... I thought it may have been related to the "Cummins 600" as in 600 ft. lbs. of torque. in our light duty trucks. I knew someone would know what this was about.

I guess it was inevitable that people would begin to confuse the Signature 600 (ISX) with the "Cummins 600" now available in Dodge trucks. Actually, I kinda think it was a poor marketing decision on Dodge's (or Cummins') part... seems like it would be better not to confuse the public. :)

Most of the large engine builders build a 600 HP engine... . their torque rating is currently at 2250 ft lbs of torque... . The limiting factor to engine HP is the clutch in class 8 trucks.....

Most engine builders have played with an engine that has no cam shaft... the valves are opened with a Hyd System that uses HP engine oil and a second oil pump... . a simple example of this is the injection system on the power stroke engine... . a second oil pump running at 200 psi uses an electrical signal to fire the hyd injector... . The same process can open valves.....

An engine as we know today, with out a cam shaft and the ability for the computer to vary valve timing has been proven to raise base engine HP and torque 25 to 40 %. In the case of the CAT engine I'm familier with base engine HP goes from 575 to 800 HP only by changing valve timing... ...

The problem is that the clutch won't handle the load or torque... SAE(society of automotive engineers) has been working on new standards for HD truck clutches for 3 or 4 years... . but nothing is poured into stone... .

Hope this insight has been helpful

camless engines are the way of the future, and i can't wait for them... power and fuel economy and a real compression release brake if programed right... :D:D:D

Indeed, the Dodge/Cummins emphasis on the 600 focuses on the class leading torque numbers. When it all comes down to it in the Cummins world, it goes by engine # and it being an ISBe-325. Cummins denotes its engine types by their letter designation (ISB, ISBe, ISC, ISM, ISX), then the engine's horsepower.

BTW - I picked up my new 05 Saturday... . and the guys at the dealership were answering some questions about the rumored 4500 and 5500... . I own an F550 I wish to dump... . and am willing to wait another year for the 5500..... However they talked about a Cummins V-8..... and I've never heard about any information about a V-8... . Cummins has staked out its market share by building a good quality 6 cylinder engine... Of course the guys at the dealer ship were talking and I tried to get something in writing..... or at least the publication they have read... ... I get sevral mechanical engeering magazines that are associated with SAE ( society of automotive engineers) and haven't seen a word about a Cummins V-8... . so the rumor has started.....

Signature 600

What about an Allison transmission? They put those in Mining & Industrial applications that are way more than 800HP.

My friend has a sig six in his volvo 770. pures like a kitten. chrome valve cover looks real cool. It say signiture six in big letters

I completely agree with you. So the new ones that have 610 ft lbs are 610's or are they 600's? I call both my '03 and '04. 5 trucks ETH's - no confusion. They should have just left the 600's as '04. 5 HO's.

The v-8 Cummins is being tested on the road now in a 1500 Ram  I have a friend that has driven it. Good power and excllent mileage.
