6BT starter question

1975 Ford F-600

Hello Diesel fans.

I Just bought a wrecked 90 Dodge Ram 250 4x4 auto trany. & am going to put it in my 77 Chevy 4x4 1ton service body work truck. I am looking for advise on this repower, any is appreciated. Am also wondering if the auto trany is a good option or should I go with dodge manual. I am running muncie in stock set up but want to upgrade. 410 axles in truck now.

Thanks, GWharregard

Stay with the manual transmission, but you aren't going to like those gears. Your top speed will be about 65. What gears are in the truck you bought? You might want to swap the axles if it has 3. 54's, and you probably want the front axle anyway since it is a dana 60.

Here is a ebay link for motor mounts,

I modified a set of 90-93 style Dodge engine mount brackets and used my factory Chevy frame mounts in the stock location. The set on ebay would be bolt on. I am using hockey pucks to lift the body 1" to make the intercooler fit. My truck has the huge factory diesel radiator but it is too wide to fit between the intercooler nipples so I will have to find a narrower one.

just use the dodge radiator it fits perfectly behind the intercooler. You have to trim away the valence for the intercooler to fit but it will fit right inside the grill. Definately use a dodge manual especially if you are going to modify the engine any. Change the gears in the rear end to 3. 73s or better higher gearing (lower number) I'm running 4. 10s in mine with a 3gsk, 32" tires, a nv5600, and my top speed is 78 mph. I"m switching to 3. 42s so I can get some gas mileage and some speed. 3. 73 is probably enough for regualr driving around but our speed limit is 75 here so I need to go a little faster and need to be in the rev range so I'm not gobbling fuel down. With the nv5600 you'll have to trim the transmission tunnel and cut the firewall for the 6bt. There's lot's of other things don't know if they are covered in that other article. But most of them have been coverred in this forum search for chevy cummins and I'm sure you'll come up with nearly all the information you need.

It is a lot easier to lift the body 2" I put an 86 6bt into an 83 chev 1/2 ton about 13 yrs ago I have 3. 42 gears with a US Gear overdrive which is 20% thing hauls the trans is an sm465 top load pulled a 27 ft 5th wheel with it and could not keep a clutch in it a SB would hold it now I have put over 200,000 miles on it and done a lot of tinkering with it. It still runs good I have the chev diesel rad in it and a intercooler from a 96 2500 Ram. Some of the old timers out there will remember it as I had it at the Mesquite Nev. rally some years ago. Ramblin on thats what happens when you get old.
