CAT Engine Workshop is Offensive

Been driving an '01 powerstroke

Thought the full size 'yota was supposed to be out by 2008? Don't know if my 03 will make it till the end of the decade!!

My money is on Nissan. I wouldn't be surprised if Cummins signed the agreement with them.

Hey, D-C! What are you waiting for? A BlueTec diesel would be a nice option in the following vehicles:

- Ram 1500

- Dakota

- Durango

- Wrangler

I agree JHerr! I actually hope it's Nissan. Then I can hopefully buy that Armada with a Cummins V-8 when the time comes.

Interesting. I hope they stay with Dodge. Testing was done with a Durango, and a 1500 dodge, according to the presentation at the DEER conference.

As much of Cummins fan as I am, I don't understand why DC is still using an outside supplier for diesel engines when the Mercedes side of the company has such a variety of good diesel engines in all sizes imaginable. It doesn't make much bussiness sense to me.

I had tons of pics of the v-8 in the 1500 Ram used for the testing... ... ... it was a very tight fit. Don't think it would be much fun to work on,but it would smoke the tires pretty hard. I doubt by the end of the decade that they will still run the same.

I'll tell you one thing... if there was a Cummins diesel in an import like Nissan or Toyota - that would be a good thing.

Repeated issues like lift pumps and injection pumps would positively not be tolerated by those companies and would drive up Cummins quality control. I think it would be a real eye opener for them to see the harsh standards those companies have for their suppliers.

For whatever reason, American auto makers let their suppliers get away with murder. Also probably on of the reasons that the American car companies are in trouble.

As much as I love my Cummins power, there's a lot of room for quality and reliability improvement.

My dream truck would be if Volvo made a 1 ton pickup for this market with a Cummins diesel in it. Awesome.

VERY well said! ;)

Here is something to think about. The biggest maker of diesel engines in the world is Volkwagen, but the biggest maker of diesel engines over 200 hp in the world is Cummins.

I am pretty sure that Cummins considers the Dodge Ram a niche market in relations to it's other interest where as Dodge on the other hand considers the 5. 9 Cummins as a major bread winner for the company.

So who has the most to lose if here if Dodge chooses to go the Mercedes route for their top end truck market. I don't think it is Cummins ;)

It may be brand loyalty, but they were using Cummins before Daimler came into the picture. Now that Daimler is in the picture, DC has many more options for engines than just Cummins. The problem as I see it for them is Dodge would have much more to lose than Cummins if they changed their engine supplier for their pickups. They might lose a lot of customers.

I still think that if DC is going to use the V-6 and V-8 Cummins, that may not make much business sense since DC already has multiple in-house suppliers of diesel engines.

Nissan or Toyota, or even Ford for that matter, would tap a huge market of pickup buyers if they were to build a high quality pickup around an equally high quality engine at a lower proce point than a full size heavy duty pickup. That doesn't mean Dodge would necessarily lose market share since I would love to have a half-ton diesel pickup/SUV for a daily driver and keep the 1-ton pickup for the bigger jobs.

Trouble is, Toyota, and I'm pretty sure Nissan already have good turbodiesels in trucks overseas... why pay Cummins, unless they don't wanna pay the EPA for certificate? Maybe Honda (do they have a diesel)? I'd love to see the Toyota diesel offered in the US, but with the new regs coming in... I doubt it. I think Dodge, or Ford...

John

Virtually any automaker who sells vehicles outside the US has diesel engines in production, Honda, Toyota, Ford/Europe, DC...

It's very rare to see a gasoline-powered SUV in Europe.

Could be Dodge...

This is this week's headline in Automotive News:

Dodge may get new Cummins diesels

Dodge is likely to get a pair of new high-performance turbocharged diesel engines from its longtime diesel engine supplier, Cummins Inc. The engines, a 4. 2-liter V-6 and a 5. 6-liter V-8, are scheduled for production in 2010 and probably will first appear in the light-duty 1500 version of the Ram pickup and the Durango SUV.

KCJackson, I read the same thing. I stand corrected, it appears to be D-C getting these new Cummins engines. That makes me happy. I'd rather drive a D-C product than a Nissan, anyway.

Sorry Daimler-Chrysler, didn't mean to throw you folks under the bus. Apparently somebody is listening to us dieselheads.
