Cummins Vacuum Compressor died 100K miles

Looking for suggestions! Should I replace the vacuum pump from Cummins for the Jake Brake (big $$$) or go to another make such as the one that uses compressed air to operate? Would have thought I would have gotten more years out of the Cummins part.

AGAIN - - LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS!

When mine died, I bought a PAC brake and replaced the whole package. Most of the wiring worked for the new unit. Only you can decide if it's worth the cost for the entire package. I probably could have replaced the diaphram for a lot less $$ but figured peace of mind in reducing the chance for fan belt failure was worth it.

Check out Geno's prices on vacuum pump parts then decide.

I installed the Jacobs Brake on my 2003 in Aug of '03 at 3,000 miles. I had to replace the vacuum pump about 5 years later at 39,000 miles. I currently have 75,000 miles on the truck, and so far so good on the second pump. I had a US Gear brake on a previous truck and had a lot of problems with it. I am happy with the Jacobs Brake.

Put a Pacbrake on my truck 5 years ago and it has worked flawlessly. They hold better then the vacuum operated brake.

Thanks Guys - - one of the TDR members had a almost new complete vacuum pump and he lives only 50 miles away - - called him and headed that way by 5pm yesterday and had the pump put on by this AM - - works like a champ

Same thing happened to me a few years back. Had about 80K on mine. The Dodge Stealership wanted over $900 large for the pump! I drove two blocks to the Cummins place and bought it for $239. Not a hard decision to make. Still works good.

Ditto. Had to replace mine on my '03 twice, and both times got the part from Cummins for far less than half the price from Dodge (same part--all parts of the exhaust brake carry three part numbers, for Jacobs, Cummins, and Dodge). The second time I had the Dodge dealership (had the truck towed when the failed vacuum pump ate the serpentine belt) send a parts runner to the Cummins dealer to get the part!

My dad's first vac pump failed two weeks ago at 105K miles and 7 years old. I am still on my original pump at 6 years and 82K miles.

I have a new diaphram from Genos waitin for me to replace it. Just tryin to decide if I have to pull the pump off the truck or do in place... ... ..... this will be the 2nd fix, I gotta check for a leak after install. Any suggestions? Thanks

I think you need to pull it off. When you seperate the two there is an oil issue that you won't want to deal with while mounted.

My pump seems to still be working but when I turn the brake off I can hear a ticking under heavy acceleration. It's like the brake is not open all the way. I also get an occasional squeal when the brake is on. Can the brake itself get stuck or fail?

" Can the brake itself get stuck or fail? " Yes it can but I can't say that's your problem. Carbon can build up in the brake, especially if it isn't used enough. PAC also sells a high temp lube to be used on the linkage.

How would one get the carbon out? Take the brake out? Or is there an, um, easier way to do it?

I'm going to get a vacuum gauge and see what the pump is pulling to see if that's the problem.

Cycling it helps, and a got hot EGT tow really helps as well.

We did a good tow over the Labor Day weekend. A few good grinds up the hills on Highways 50 and 722 east of Reno. Water temp was up there so I'm guessing so were EGT's. I never installed a exhaust temp gauge in this truck.

I did watch the actuator rod move in and out with someone else pulling the switch at idle and it looks like it moves smoothly. I just don't know how far it's supposed to move.

nunya - - - Definitely remove the whole thing - - the lube oil will make a mess when you separate the pump at the the vacuum pump bolts - - - easy to clean up when you do it on the tail gate - - trust me - - experience speaks!

thanks for the replies on removing the pump... ... don` t need a mess for sure. Are there any videos or good diagrams available on this repair?? Just asking, thanks again!
