Hi all,

I need some help. A guy i know is thinking of getting a new truck. His dad just got a new '06 Duramax at a real decent price. He drove it and now has the diesel bug.

I took him for a ride in my 12v, the whole time talkin up the cummins. He was like, this thing is awsome...

So he went looking at trucks and now he's off the Dodge because some dumb salesman argued that the cummins has more HP than a Duramax. Supposedly Chevy has more?

Anyway, I need help getting him to consider the cummins again so he doesn't get the duracrap...

Thanks,

Chris

I guess you meant to say Dmax has more than Cummins per the salesman?... well sorta maybe an not. . per litre, cummins has more and the Mileage thing is clue too... I get about 22 solo if I baby it... 11 towing 15K !!

Cummins in the 5. 9 is proven for 18 years in design and practice. The new 6. 7 is just a bigger 5. 9... same design... Ford 6. ? and Dmax is relative newcomers and although Dmax has not had much trouble... both are less than 5 yrs. old in their current design.

Also tell him ALL Big Rig Engines are in-Line 6 Diesels... Cat, Cummins, Detroit, Mercedes... yes some are V-8 but for other purposes. .

tell him to get the cummins, he won't regret it.

The guy won't go wrong with either choice - and if he gets the Dodge due to your urgings, then has problems or dislikes it, you'll never hear the end of it! :-{}

He a grown man, provide him with info, then let him make his own choices...

also remind him when he gets all done and drives the dodge home he will have about an extra 10grand in his pocket to accessorize his new truck... Oo.

My wife just gave me the OK to buy a new truck if I want to. The rebates for both are really tempting... if you can find '06 Dmax leftovers. So far, no problem finding leftover CTD's. The one thing my '97 has going for it is what it doesn't have... a payment book!!:D

I agree. My mother recently went through this same process, but ended up settling on the Chev due to affordability and options. She's never had any trouble with the motor, nor the transmission. She's had two DMax's and has loved them both. I'm preferential to the Cummins, but they are both great products.

tell him to drive them both.

the 07 lbz d-max may be the way to go, I would not get the lmm d-max just yet.

the allison is nice and I bet the 68rfe will be just as good. But that trans will only be on a brand new 07 dodge.

he might like the low rider style of the cheby, I dont.

If he is adventurous the tell him to buy the new ford with the new 6. 4 twin turbo.

The best thing your '97 has going for it is a real injection pump with no electronic **** on it.

I'm rather nervous about the new ULSD fuel & the possible trouble I could have with it. So far, no problems except a clogged fuel filter. I do notice my mpg's slipping. I watch the 3rd gen threads & the problems they have. My biggest concern is the lack of D/C honoring their warranty on some issues (injector problems). I don't hear that from GM. The GM's also get better mpg's compared to the CTD. I'm also thinking of going back to a gasser (Chevy) due to even bigger rebates on '06's ($6K).

There was a 2nd gen Dodge here, a 94 with a million miles on it and that was about 7 or 8 yrs ago:eek:

OK - that's one outta HOW many? ;)

I sorta suspect a careful search MIGHT turn up a few high mileage GM and Ford rigs as well... :p

Brand loyalty is fine - as long as it doesn't totally blind us to reason and logic... :D :D

I don't know but I'd guess that's one out of thousands with high milage on them. Just the other day on this site someone posted, how many miles do you have on a stock engine. People posted some high numbers there, some guys even commented that they bought their trucks with over 200k on them. I know there are some 7. 3's out there with some high miles on them too but recently I'm hearing, "I got 1500 miles and no problems yet" from the ford guys

i bought a used 89 5. 9 with 180,000 on it and didnt even hesitate to put it in my 96 2500 without even touching anything inside it. the only repairs have in the quest for more power, not cuz it broke, and im sure i can get another 150,000 miles on it

I have a 2003 ram quadcab with the cummins. I get approximately 20+ mpg driving during the winter in new england. I drive easy 65 mph highway and 40+mph on the backroads. My truck was getting warr. work done at the dealer and i used my friends 2005 gmc dur. to go to Disney, 2400 miles. Great truck however only got 9. 8 mpg towing my 33 foot fifth wheel. My Cummins ussually gets 14+ mpg while towing. I would rather have my RAM all day and all night. Fw weight of 8300lbs empty. good luck.

Great discussion... I'm not trying to tell him what to buy or anything. I just think the V8 diesels are too dang rattly. If i was trying to persuade anything it was to find a 12V. IMO the cummins is the best all around start everytime get the job done engine, but i have a non turbo 6. 9L for that is bulletproof. My mom's 95 Ford has to be pluged in under 50 degrees or it won't fire.
