Thanks, TDR Staff

I pulled a semi out of the median

ABS and parking dash lites

I got teary eyed too, when I started to add the dollars up on all the other repairs... . they should have bought a new one at about 500K... . they paid for it... a miilion miles is still impressive!!... CJ

The only real downside to the Cummins engine in a Dodge... is the limitations Dodge builds into the trucks. I will probably never own a Ford truck, but Ford does have a whole lotta different body styles and configurations. Sometimes when I look at my truck I think, Why stop here? To bad there isn't a Dodge Crew (or quad) model 4500-6500 series. Come on DC. If you build it, we will buy it.

John,

the only thing I don't agree with is what you said about the "limitations Dodge built into" the trucks...

The torque profile of the Cummins is much different than the V8 diesels, DC admits that this has caused problems with the automatic. The F@rd and D-minus don't have this problem, since they don't build low end torque as quickly as the Cummins does.

So it's not built in limitations. . but what they call "system intergration" issues in my industry.

With some after market magic... problem solved.

Would I have liked some of that after market magic as an factory option for my auto, YES... that I fault DC for...

I find my brakes in my 2500 the best I've owned soo far. I do all my own work... and I don't have the brake pull problems.

My Fords ate brakes... I'm at 20K miles of all towing and off road, much around town travel to get there and some highway. . the brakes are still fresh. This is the 1st truck, the most powerfull and heaviest I've had, and the only one that I've been able to make 20K on the brakes.

I'm happy with the 2500 Ram. . I myself don't need a "4500" version... . Don't need 4 full size doors. . just need a crew cab, but never liked the access to the back area on a 2 door truck. I found that the Quad Cab broke that niche market for me and allows great single spot access (stand in one spot and open two doors)for both doors. .

Sorry. . I'll stop now...

I guess I should have said...

that the limitations I was referring to revolve more around the lack of options as it relates to configuration. There just aren't enough Dodge models to compete against the heavier duty Fords over 1 ton. It seems as though Dodge just conceded this market to Ford and GM. I wouldn't want a bigger truck right now, but it would be nice to have the option from Dodge. Oh well...

I have had the Ford and Dodge over the years and as Cobrajet puts it both are good trucks. My F-350 lasted 187,000 trouble free miles with regular maintance and slung a rod out of the block taking the clutch slave cylinder lines and brake lines with it. Engine oil, anti freeze and Dew Dew ( from in side the cab ) went every where. At first I thought I had broken another S belt the little Diesel was still running dispite a very violant shaking. The thing is I had just pulled into 5th and was at 65 mph at the top of a hill when she blew about 2000 RPM. In the middle of now where Mississippi no cell area I left my truck and trailer saddled my mare and rode home 22 miles. My wife towed me in later that evening with my 88 4x4 Ram Charger. Then I got my Dodge an aint looked back sense.

I kinda did the same thing coming from Idaho through Wyo. The stations were all closed and the truck was running very low on fuel. Needless to say I ran out of gas (it was a V-10) and I saddled up the Polaris 500 and rode up to a gas station about 15 miles ahead. It was about 0 degrees outside i was lucky to still be alive after that ride back and forth.

Towing with that V-10 it used twice the fuel pulling my big gooseneck trailer as it did empty. Caught me off guard.

My response to a "Power Stroke" fan is this,

"Consider this, why does it take 85 more cubic inches and 2 more cylinders to make about the same hp & torque in your engine then mine?" It stops them dead in their tracks evey time, and I've never had a comeback yet!

If you talk to any diesel mechanic out there they will tell you there is more hp & torque potential in the Cummins then the Power stroke or in a I-6 vs. a V-8. Thats why you see many more I-6 motors in big trucks then V-8's.

OK, back to my hole.

tell them what they want to hear...

Oh come on. Just tell them that you couldn't afford the payments on a new ford and you always pay cash.

Then wait until you've bombed the hell out of it. SMOKE 'em out everytime you can, untill they learn to pass you. Then show them pretty ford boys what the mighty cummins is all about!!

danelle :D :D

I have to admit that DC has really screwed up by not offering more chassis configuration options. Also, why are they still trying to figure out a decent auto trans. after they have been putting the Cummins in their trucks for 13 years?

On the other hand, how come you can't get the mighty Powerjoke in a 33k lb. GVWR F-750? And I as far as locomotives are concerned it's not about I vs. V. Those things need to make an enormous amount of power and with a V configuration you can cram more cylinders in. The lack of V engines in the class 8 trucks pretty much sums up the I vs. V argument. :D

The bottom line is they are both good engines but I would take the Cummins any day over the Navistar-easier to bomb, easier to work on and greater torque potential. Ford and Dodge both build good, solid trucks that make a great platform for a good Diesel engine unlike Cheby!
