Cummins Vs... Topkick...

Ok this might be a very stupid question but I was wondering, modified ram 2500 vs, topkick in say towing power



it might seem rediculous, but the weight of both arent entirely different and the cummins is a medium duty engine

the reason I ask is a kid around here bought one and is driving it around acting like the ***** saying hes got the best diesel etc etc... stuff like that





so I just thought to myself, well engine wise a modified ram will be producing much more power... granted he can too, but I would put the cummins before the duramax



anyways, sorry for the dumb question just wondering



and if anyone has anything to add please tell me

From a power standpoint they're about equal stock, with a slight edge to the Ram in general driving performance.



A modified Ram will out accelerate a Topkick.



The Topkick has real medium duty (class 6 & 7) brakes, suspension, driveshafts, differential(s), frame, wheels, lugs, etc, that the light duty Ram pickup truck doesn't have.



To stay under CDL they both have to be 26,000GVWR or less, so on paper they may look equal, but the undercarriage of the Topkick is a true medium duty truck.

Strap 10,000 #'s to each of 'em and see who's king of the Hill. It sure isn't going to be that Kitty. It's got either a 3116 or 3126 which is a decent engine but wont hold a candle to the 5. 9 with a few modds.

It depends on the size of the Topkick, 4500-5500, is class 4-5 or midrange size. Powered by the Duramax/auto combo, no standard transmission available. So for pure towing I would prefere the Dodge w/6spd. However if you get up to the true medium duty, class 6-7 size, then you can get all kinds of engine/transmission combos. At this point the Dodge is out classed.

the guy has the duramax engine for sure, Im sure its the older model as well



its an auto obviously and its the 4500





I just want to shut him up bad... he makes it like its such a big deal etc...



I mean dont get me wrong its a nice truck, but it has the wrong engine in it(know what Im saying )



if it came with a cummins and stick, I would be very willing to buy one,

When I hear TopKick I think of the older model TopKick/Kodiak trucks... ... I forgot about the newer, smaller TopKick's... sorry.

Yea, we had a '96 with a 5 yard box on it. Those are the ones I think of when I hear TopKick. (Gotta keep up on the new tech there Dan-o..... ) @ self...



366, I believe, V8 with the 5 speed, 2 speed rear.



Underpowered, but my Dodge *wishes* it had u-joints & brakes that big. :-laf

You might want to check that out some more,,, Friend of mine his dad owns afew tow trucks and a couple roll-back's the newer one is a 5500 with a standard trans

Pulling 10 to 15K up a hill would be a hellova match for the two because the topkick is geared a lot lower and while it may take more gas (Oops Diesel!) to get the topkick rolling, but hitting a hill at 60-65 they dont seem to lose much ground sometimes. I have driven the freightliner sport chassis (my parents business are selling them now) and they will beat my dodge hands down both ways up or down the hill with 17K worth of horses and stuff. Those Cats haul *&s!! and they have the brakes and exhaust brake to slow everything back down nicely.

For it would be so nice to have a truck that has power !!!!
