Cure for the 2000 RPM Drone??

Well the truck is new and it has got the drone. It starts around 70 mph and is noticable in my ears, my fanny, and I can see the rear view mirror vibrating. Pretty annoying... Any solutions found other than the "shrink wrap the driveshaft" brainwave solution.

Do a search on the "2000 rpm drone" it is the power booster hose. The factory fix is to put a weight on to the hose as seen on 2004 models. Take it back to the dealer they should just give you the weight to put on.

Thank you for the reply. I will do a search, are you refering to the power steering hose? I am unfamiliar with the "power booster" hose. Also, is there a TSB on this issue or is it just a fix the dealer should know about? Thanks for your help.

There's a TSB on it. My service writer looked it up today. My appointment is for tomorrow at 09:00. The whole hose gets replaced with the weight on it.

Also, the drone will get better with mileage!!! When I first got my truck the noise around 2000 RPM was so loud it physically hurt my ears to listen to for long periods of time. The engine is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter now with 16500 miles on the clock. (Or, my ear drums are shot!).

Just got off the phone with my service dept. , and they couldn't find any TSB associated with a drone. Of course, the woman I spoke with asked me "which displacement Cummins engine do you have?". When I was silent (from the shock), she said "do you even know? Is it 5. 9?" To which I replied "the Cummins engine is only available in 5. 9L displacement for the Dodge". #ad






Steve, when you get yours done, please send me the TSB number off the bill so I can educate these knuckleheads!

Please excuse my ignorance but does this apply ONLY to the 03-04 trucks that gets the power boost hose replaced?

I just had mine fixed yesterday with a new booster hose and weight and it made the vibration go away. I was having a Jacobs exhaust brake put on and they fixed it then.

Guess I better check with the service writer I noticed that pesky drone on my Oregon coast trip.

Got the hose job today. It's hard to imagine the hose would transmit that much vibration and just adding a weight to the hose would cure it. At 67mph (2100rpm) there's no more buzz in the steering wheel or peddles. I'll assume this trick would work for the 2nd gens that have hydro boost brake boosters like my '98 did and vibrated for 89k miles before I traded it.

It seems as though the drone can come from more than one source. Some say drive shaft angle is the cause on some trucks and for others it is associated with the exhaust system, turbo etc. The key would be to try and isolate the root cause first if possible. If it is an exhaust issue, we have seen good results using an Aeroturbine exhaust system with the Aeroturbine as far forward int he system as possible. The placement of the muffler does seem to make a lot of differnce regarding noise and drone.

Mine had three. The out of round driveshaft was cured with a driveshaft from another truck when I bought it. The steering wheel, peddle buzz was cured yesterday. And the 2700rpm vibration remains. I don't know if there is a cure for that one unless the motor smooths out with more miles on it like my past three have. I don't want them tinkering with it too much...
