I was reading Diesel Power the other day and saw a guy with an F-250 with a Cummins 12V swap and an Allison auto transmission. There was not any info on the transmission but I sort of assumed it was out of a D'Max diesel.

So that got me thinking about the feasability of swapping in an Allison into my 2001 2500 CTD/Auto LWB Quad.

Anyone got any opinions or ideas on this? Anyone done it or in the process?

Just real curious about it.

A search of Allison swap will give you plenty of reading and vendor's who sell kits for the swap. I've been interested in this for a while with my left knee getting worse every year but havent taken the plunge. I was kind of hoping a kit for the 68RFE would come out.

Brief (I mean very brief) research on DESTROKED: Cummins Conversions looks like this swap would cost a bunch more than have one of the reputable builders do up my 47RE.

-Rebuilt 1000 series Allison $2800
-GM 261? xfer case $600-800
-Conversion plate/flex plate $1600
-Stand alone computer and harness $1500
-Misc crap $800

= $7500 = OUCH!

Do you think it is worth it?

I faced the same decision when I was thinking of doing that swap on my truck. It was going to be about $8000 with a stage 2 kit installed (to handle 500 Hp). I decided to wait..... :{

I still would like to install a 6 speed automatic in my truck at some point in the future. It does not have to be an Allison other than "Cummins / Allison" just sounds pretty cool.

They use an Allison but it doesn't have overdrive.

It would be nice if there was an allison that was hydraulicly shifted, with od.

As I read this, I can't help but wonder: What's in the school buses transmission wise?

Also, if I understand correctly there are only certain Allison trannies that will work with a x-fer case for a 4x4, if you try to use one that does not work with a x-fer case you will have to run a divorced x-fer case and that is a real pain. I am pretty sure that the trannies in the buses are not a model that works with a x-fer case.

The guy I was talking too recommended a transfer case used in the GM. I think the main reason was that is where the RPM sensor was.

What are built 47re's going for these days? When I was checking before they were 5k-8k so whats the big difference except 2 more gears and not haveing problems getting rolling with a 47re? I know some had issues with low end and I dont know if the problems have been resolved but those were the issues when I was checking into it before. In my mind if prices are relatively the same as they were I would take the allison for the low gear and better highway mileage.
