I recently purchased a 2005 3500 4x4 with an automatic. Truck has 85,000 miles and looks real clean. I keep hearing stories about injector problems and have a few concerns. Truck has never been chipped, but I picked up an Edge Juice w/Attitude, that I hope can be used to improve mileage and help w/towing an 11,000 lb. trailer. What are good spare pieces to keep along- what kinds of symptoms show up when injectors start going bad? Where do you find a 3 micron fuel filter to fit stock housing? Any other things that should be looked at around this mileage? My 98 12-valve was a great truck and I hope this one will be as dependable. Thanks, Jim.

What a shame you got rid of your '98! I don't think any truck will be as reliable as the good old 12V. You can't get a 2 mic filter for the stock fuel system AFAIK, but glacier sells a filtration kit that will allow you to get this:
Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail
Usual symptoms of injector issues are reduced rail pressure, smoke, fuel in oil. I have had more cracked injector bodies on my '05 than I care to mention.
Check your ball joints for wear, the uppers usually go first and if not attended to can cause further damage to the front end, this is mainly on 4X4.
On the '05 I keep a spare fuel filter, accessory belt, rail pressure sensor, and fuel control actuator having had so many issues with the fuel system
Good luck with your new ride.

I still have the 98, know anybody looking for one? Ball joints have been changed. Your saying a fuel pressure gauge should be added to my list of accesories. Thanks for the input. Jim.

Glad to hear you still have the '98... PM me a price.

A rail pressure gauge is just as important on a 3rg gen, as is a fuel pressure gauge on a VP powered truck. It should be part of your gauge complement IMO.

Edge will be your 1st mistake,IMO Edge product help reduce injector life, Now over the years I get More calls from Edge owners experiencing excessive smoke and starting issues. There are Edge lover's (Cheerleaders) here at the TDR,Please PM your Phone #s to Me and I will forward it to those so they may share their experiences. Edge Product add HP just like they claim, but I think you will be hard press to find owners with over 100k of use without issues. ( we service all makes and models ) The duramax seems to be the most plague with Edge Products.

I would go with a Smarty Jr instead of the Edge. My understanding is the Smarty does not raise rail pressure like other boxes. Smarty is undetectable, when removed, if you still have warranty OR Emissions testing.
I put a Glacier 2 micron filter setup on my truck and the install is real clean. My $0. 02 worth

My 05 has 77,000 miles. The only repair has been the #4 injector feed line. I run the Smarty JR and have the original injectors with no problems. In fact this has been the most trouble free truck I have ever owned. I use Power service every tank of fuel and change the stock 7 micron fuel filter every 10K. Plus I have had no ball joint,u joint problems all are original. One thing to watch on early 05's the intercoolers had plastic end caps mine is that way and is still ok but I will go after market when it goes south. Enjoy your truck and drive it like you stole it.

Most plague with what components?

Had a D-Max in the other day that runs Juice on #2 with trans now slipping.

Did an injector a few weeks ago on a CTD with Juice also on #2 with cracked body.

Do you see any troubles from those running non pressure boxes/downloaders?

Pressure needs to best balanced, I have no problems with devices that add all 3 Pressure/Timing/duration, Now Pressure Only needs to be treated extremely careful, it will cause spiking and surges that are damaging not only to components but Vehicles, garage doors, buildings, etc. Now the claim that the attitude does not increase pressures is correct. The Problem is it has no way of understanding current configurations', not to mention pump, rail upgrades. When we get extreme cold the Edge device May malfunction (To my knowledge Edge Products do not have stealth ability or Know valve memory or does it communicate with PCI out of OBD codes) I will share this experience, T&C offer their products for a very very short time, it was early Jan 04 I get the call that vehicle has no start condition ( Owner was on business In CA wife has truck 04 Duramax in Parking Lot at her Place of employment at 9pm with -27 wind-chill -40 ,I get wife cell # call her to let her know I have tow truck coming ASAP. . Now I knew that the edge device may be the problem but was not willing to admit to it, Truck was tow to shop were the tech was instructed by Me to disconnect the Edge device, This was done outside before truck was going to be push into truck bay, Truck started instantly, reconnected edge in truck bay no start condition, reconnection factory starts instantly, I ask edge to pay the tow bill, they declined... The tech (Edge) thought that the women should have been able to disconnect the device and reconnect factory harnesses AT -27. EVERY unit we sold fail in some way.
