Has anyone fabricated any sort of a CAI (cold air intake) and/or box/enclosure for their BHAF? I know, since after all it's a "Big Honkin Air Filter" room is limited, just wanting to see if anyone has come up with something and have pics to share. With summer season coming on I'm wanting to make something for the one on my '98. 5.

Vaughn: I too have a fleetguard BHAF. I noticed that 2/3 of the filter stays cool to the touch while the other 1/3 is warm or hot depending on what the truck is doing from being close to the turbo.

I'm thinking of putting a heat shield over the turbo to keep heat away. Either a blanket or a polished stainless steel sheet metal for added nice look.

I haven't decided yet. The job I work at has polished 304 stainless that I can use.

Maybe I'll try and build a heat shield that goes around the side of filter to keep turbo heat away.

I used a SS heat shield on the HX35W turbo on my 2002 with a BHAF. I believe I got mine from LarryB's, IIRC.

I no longer have the 2002 - see signature. I never noticed any real hot spots on the BHAF with the heat shield.

Before Afe came to be I also had a ss heat shield on the 94 and made a shield out of smoked Lexan for my cone type air filter. Worked good till some one offered me a deal I could not refuse at a TDR gtg way back when

Vaughn, here's a link to my housing post from 2002 after finding the BHAF in July 2001, https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ainless-steel-housingprototype&highlight=BHAF

A couple current pictures below. I ran the housing for a long time tied in the a fresh air hole in the firewall ala Scotty, but eventually did away with all that. I did keep the fresh air hole open (shown in the attachment) I suspect a nice shot of cool air still has to make it too the turbo.

Been using this for years now, no issues - filter is one of the Donaldson "Nanofibre" types...

I use the outer, coarser material seen in the top pic to pre-filter out larger debris, and so far the filter minder has never moved, even in heavier 5er towing in the hills...

Gary, good to see you're still around and posting, me not so much (posting that is :). I suspect you've shared this before, but which exact filter are you running and where do you get it. I may try something different. The old BHAF has gotten a bit expensive.

Pretty sure I got mine thru Wayne Owen, TDR member "amsoilman" - and the outer fabric covering on mine leaves the inner nanofibre material much cleaner, and easier to blow out with pressurized air - the fabric I just wash out by hand as needed...

Ha, started this thread then forgot about it! Thanks for your input everyone, will give the shield idea a try. I like your setup Moparguy, that's pretty cool. Gary do you have any more info on your Donaldson filter. . . hadn't heard they do a nanofilber filter. Is it cleanable?
