Here is a picture of the nerf bars I built. I just got them back from powder coating. The color match came out well. Now I need to decide what to do for a top stepping surface. My original idea is to Line-X the top edge of the bars so they will not get all scratched up and will not be slick when wet. Probably go about 1/4 of the way around the top pipe leaving the rest of the pipe red. What other ideas do people have for a good top surface? Thanks.

Those look SWEET!!

I'd probably go with the Line X. Permatech is advertising that thay can match any color now though. It doesn't fade either. UV protection is built right in.

Looks sharp!

They look good Red. I can't even see your camper bracket under there. Sorry I can't help with the bedliner, I've still got a piece of plywood in my bed.

SRadke,

Thanks. I painted the camper tie-down bracket Rustoleum - Sunrise Red. It almost perftecly matches the Flame Red. And it is hidden from the side by the bar anyway.

Spooled-up,

Thanks for the Perma-Tech link. That looks like a good option. I may check a dealer next week to see how closely their red matches.

Any other ideas - I would like to hear them.

Red Ramrod...

I pulled this off of their website. Looks like they can make you color samples on the spot.

On the Spot Color Matching

---------------------------

Only Perma-Tech, the technology leader in sprayed-on bedliners, can match your truck color right there, on-the-spot.

When you want your bedliner to match your truck, you want to see a sample of what it will look like BEFORE it's sprayed. At your local Perma-Tech dealer you can.

The high tech mixing and spray equipment that your Perma-Tech dealer uses can be fine-tuned in minutes to create the custom color you want. If you want Chevy red, you get Chevy red, not Ford red or Dodge red.

With our unique color-match system, you can see an actual sample of Perma-Tech bedliner material in the color of your choice for your approval before we spray. Too dark? Too blue? Whatever needs to be changed, your Perma-tech dealer can make the change right there and spray you another sample for approval.

I am building aluminum nerf/steps for my silver srw with aluminum flatbed... and will use the black stick on steps with the sand paper kind of tread from the RV shop. George

RR--

What size pipes and wall thickness did you use to make those? They look great. Similar to what I'm working on.

For a couple of low budget options:

1) Skateboard Grip Tape. You could just put it on top of the tube where you want a step.

2) DuraLiner. This is a do it your self roll on liner that is available in quarts at most auto stores. I have used it one a few jeep parts with good results. But 1) Clean up is not possible, just plan to throw away any parts this stuff touchs, use cheap rollers and temp paper pans. It melts plastics. 2) apply time less than 5 minutes, this stuff turns to a solid really fast. Put a little in a plate roll fast, repeat.

I covered the tops of the fender of my Flat bed trailer for added grip when loading and unloading my Jeep. It seems to help.

p. s. Congrats those nerf bars turned out great.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and suggestions. I think the perma-tech would look the best but I would worry that shoes with black soles would leave marks. Anybody have perma-tech and if so does it get marked up easily?

I checked with a line-x place and he said $50 if I bring in just the bars. I think I will go that route and apply a strip along the top. It was nice to be able to stand on the bars to wash the roof and windshield. They have been holding up well so far and are not showing any scratches. The powder coating is pretty durable. I may wait awhile to finish with the top side as they also do not seem slick even wet.

Guava,

Yes, the pipe is 4" OD 1/8" wall. For the front corners I bought 4"OD exhaust 90 degree elbows and welded on the end of the pipe. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thier are additional pictures in my gallery called nerf bars that show the mounts.
