Fellow Rammers:

I ordered my Christmas present on December 24th: a 60 gallon custom made toolbox/fuel tank combo with installation kit.

What makes it custom is I need the max height of 18 inches because of my rolltop cover. The standard height on these range from 19 to 22 inches. I searched the internet and found Capital Hitch in Florida who will modify their 60 gallon toobox/fuel tank combo by building it with the tank portion lower in height, gving me about 55 gallons of fuel. Best part is no extra cost for the modification.

I ordered the tank with the installation kit that includes all hardware to plumb into the factory fuel system and fuel gauge. Yes, I decided not to use this as a transfer tank, but as a full functioning auxilary tank. I figure using the aux tank as my primary will gravity feed fuel into my lift pump, thus relieving strain on it. Plus, the fuel level of the aux tank will read on my factory gauge. DOT certified too. Price? $1,090 complete.

I emailed some unamed companies for price quotes and the lowest came in at $1,600. Too much $$. Several companies manufacture special toolbox/fuel tank combos specially designed to work with rolltops, but wouldn't look too good if you ever got rid of the rolltop (too specialized).

Well, Santa (my wife) has been real good to me. ;D

P. S. Guys: Never underestimate the power of a diamond gift(s) to Santa (the wife). :D

You are right on with the thinking of using the aux tank as your main feed to the L/P, this will deffinatly relieve the duty on the pump, a possitive pressure is what the L/P needs , not a vaccumn!!! I did this to my truck a year ago and it is great, yes 27" of column head is equal to a pound of pressure so I figger I have about 1. 5 psi at the suction side of my L/P.

Also I mounted a small frame mount pump to transfer fuel from my oem tank to my aux.

cheers, Kevin
