Is there a chip/box out there that allows you to custom tune certain parameters? I read allot about the post injection event and how it may have impacted fuel economy (for the worse). So, I'm thinking... if we could remove this injection event…either by a custom chip or tuning we could regain some MPG.

It would also allow us to tune our truck to how we use them.

Thoughts?

NJTackle, nothing like you describe available, the only option you get with the numerous power boxes available is adjustability in the amount of power you want, and with the new TST box you can adjust torque and horsepower independently. That's pretty much it. No control over pilot injection.

I understand that creating a way to 'login' to the stock ECM to make changes would be near to impossible without revealing some proprietary information. This I don't see happening, at least not with Dodge's approval.

I was thinking more along the lines of an aftermarket ECM which would replace the stock ECM completely. It would enable you through a laptop to custom tune the motor. I know…you guys think this is impossible or not feasible. But it has already been done and offered to the backyard mechanic, as least for gas engines. I currently have a small block Chevy which I bored out to 383 ci. Instead of running a stock ECM with an aftermarket chip, I purchased the Accel DFI unit. With this, every aspect of the motor is adjustable. For example, you can adjust the fuel map curve, timing, high and low idle, etc. A great concept with a lot of potential.

As for the post-injection event, I don't understand why none of the custom tuners can't drop this from their programming. Maybe you don't want to drop it as it would do more harm then good…don't know the reasons behind this. However, options like these would be an excellent feature to have, especially when boxes start creeping towards $1k.

Why?

A few people here on the board have said that it's under R&D...

Not that I know anything... it's being done!

Well, that's a good one!

Everything can be done, THE question is how much will it cost, how many can be sold?

Let's say we have a racing team with high $$$ in their pockets. They want to run the ENGINE (not the whole truck) on the track and want a custom ECM. Well that could be done without having to spend too much money. Depends upon how much is not too much. For such an ECM I'd estimate an R&D cost of about 100-150K$ US.

Now integrating that ECM into the "system truck" that's a whole different story.

Let me only mention the dash. HOW could the drivers in our aftermaket ECM be created to make that thing work? Once again, everything can be done, question is HOW MUCH $$$ will that cost?

Then there is the PCM, the Key code the ABS... .

All those systems work one with the other in these new trucks.

How can you integrate your ECM into the "system truck"?

I think you got where I want to lead you.

I run a port EFI 454 with some nice go-fast parts in my offroad truck and I reprogrammed a GM ECM that came from a Sunbird for it. Runs like a top! I like the idea of reprogramming the stock ECM myself. It's been said on here in the past week that it's being done on the 3rd gen stuff by some aftermarket people but of course it's not available yet...
