was at the Road Armor site http://www.roadarmor.com/ and looking at what they have for the ram looks cool ! little pricey... . starting at $1350. 00 I really like warns hidden mount for the superduty (behind the stock bumper my friend has one looks real good!!) but warn doesent make it for the RAM !! so its the bolt over the bumper brush guard type or custom bumper I think I would like the custom bumper looks cooler to me!!... . but I under stand that theres tons of makers out there.

have you seen any cool winch bumpers ??

GBerry, I've got a Prozap in the front and a Ruenell in the back.

Do a search for the web sites . I'm real happy with both . The only reason I did not go with a ruenell in the front is the weight factor.

The fit and finish of the Denver offroad is A+ !

Layne at D. O. is not very computer literateso don't even bother sending him an E-mail but his phone Number ( on his site ) he has always answered. He'll talk to you all day about bumpers. Paid $1400 for mine. Has the capability for the new 15000lb winches from Warn and only weighs 135lbs (without winch).

Gotta love aluminum :D

Since we're on the subject

Has anyone seen what happens to a D. O. front

bumper when it meets Bambi, Elsie, or one of

those other road obstacles out there ??

Just curious :)

Can't say what would happen to Al. bumper hitting Bambi but, as an Aluminum boatbuilder for the last 15 years of my working life I can say with some little knowledge that Aluminum can take quite a bit of punishment.

A 98 foot motor yacht we built took a shakedown cruise up to Alaska and in Glacier Bay struck a 'growler' up near the bow. When the vessel came back we hauled her out for some modifications to the propeller shaft and looked closely at the bow area where she hit the iceberg. There was a dent in the Aluminum hull but there was not even a scratch in the LP paint! Qwner said leave it alone as a reminder of the incident and to show to people who boo-hoo Aluminum compared to 'feeberglas'.

If you have access to a copy of Machinery's Handbook you might compare the qualities of the 6000 Series Aluminum vs. the particular Steel alloy used in steel bumpers.

dave, who drives a 1995 3500 auto 4x4 and is just now realizing he bought a 'project truck' new off the lot!

Gonna be spending some money at National Spring this week that's for sure.

The DOR bumper is seriously thick Al plate! Don't think of a beer can, think of lightweight armor. And the mounts are quite solid -- the only thing you're giving up is weight. If you hit something solid enough to deform this type bumper (Al or steel), you've just deformed the truck frame, as well. And I second the note to just call DOR/Layne -- fantastic bumper builder, but not much for email.

I hit a deer a few weeks ago at about 45mph, jumped onto the road so quick I never even had time to get off the throttle. Clipped the front right side of the DOR bumper and tossed her back across the ditch. Crushed the front half of the deer to about 4" thick, left some blood and hair on the front of the truck and in the honeycomb grill. Didn't break anything, not even the bug deflector above the bumper arm. :D Next time I'll get the camera out and take some pix.

Neighbor down the street totalled his month-old D/A a few days later, had a yearling elk bounce off his front end in the same spot as my deer. Didn't even have time to make the first payment, and he's already hassling with the insurance company (depreciation = down payment). :(

Thanks, PNWRADAR, Jon

This was the info I was looking for. A friend of mine, hit a $5000. 00 deer doing about 70 mph.

He and the kids are fine, airbags did not deploy.

Imagine that. I am very interested in the weight loss of the D. O. over steel. I did not want to

modify the front springs and shocks, cashflow...

All I want for Christmas is my D. O bumper :D :D :D

So what is the weight of the Road Armor??

Hi everyone,

I've been looking for that web site, so thanks for the post above for it. Now I remember, weight was an issue with this bumper. What is the exact weight of it? I'm interested in this bumper, but I've got to get my truck first :) (Stupid credit cards... )

Thanks, Michael

The DOR piece if deffinitely nice. Aluminum can take quite a hit, but it will not bend and deform the same as steel. Al tends to crack before it will bend. BUT this is not a bad point. AL is more rigid than steel of the same thickness. Al mountain bikes are a great example. Al frames are stiffer and do not deflect under load (such as my fat-butt) as much as steel, but steel has a greater life cycle than Al. Meaning, steel will deflect more under load, but it can do this many more times than Al if it were to deflect. Al framed mountain bikes transmit way more vibration to the rider.

I have the Reunel setup, but I was present when MacTruck installed his DOR. It is a sweet piece. I would definitely consider the Al because I woudn't have had to change my front springs to keep the nose dive under control during hard braking.

I beg to differ, Aluminum particularly the 5000 and 6000 seris will stretch or deform way before they will crack.

That is one of the better qualities of Aluminum in those before mentioned alloys.

See my post in this thread re, the Aluminum motor yacht hitting the growler in Glacier Bay, Alaska.

Thanks

Thanks for the above story and info Dave. I had my head somewhere else  the other day when I replied to Jon's post and I did not see yours until now.

Custom Bumpers and Guards

What about this fine company,,Browns Welding,,They are a small family business located in Texas and build some of the finest bumpers and brush guards I've come across to date,,One of our M-D TDR members (Wiredawg)has them installed on his ride and their craftsmanship is excellent,,They are not on the web so you'll have to call them,,Their number is 1-800-625-8712,,I myself drive truck and travel all over the west and I can tell you the number of their bumpers on trucks out there is quite alot,,Some of the meanest and nastiest looing bumpers you'll ever see,,I would not want to be on the recieving end of a hit from one i'll tell you,,Just another idea for you.....

Do any of these bumper makers make brackets with there bumpers so that they will work with a body lift and be at the correct height, and still be strong enough to winch and pull on? I e-mailed Pro-Zap once and did not get a reply. Has anyone asked about this?
