New Member Here,

I've been looking through all of the threads everyone has posted. They have all been helpful, I even adjusted my star wheel yesterday. Obviuosly i am looking for more power. My tail pipe just fell off, so I think I'll just tke the muffler out too. Anyway, my problem is this. When pulling my trailer up long hills or on long stretches of interstate the accelerator pedal sinks to the floor, and the engine looses all power and shuts down. I am usually able to pull off to the side of the road. Anyway, I pop the hood purge the fuel/ water seperator. I can usually get it started after that. I have changed the F/W separator three times in the past three months, and the problem hasn't gone away. The dealership suggested that I put new spark-plugs in! Needless to say Maryland isn't helpful. ANy help or ideas would be appreciated. One more thing Has anyone had problems shifting into reverse. After moving the gear selector, it takes abou 30-45sec. before it will shift, only in the mornings. I have a 94 2500 4X4.

Thanks Again,

John

P. S. Glad to see I am not the only one with a messed up fuel gage.

John,

Glad to have you aboard.

Your problem may be the infamous leaky fuel hose problem. There are two of these hoses, from and to the fuel tank. The return line is the most likely to leak, but the job is kind of a PITA so it's best to replace both of them at the same time. These hoses are behind the fuel filter and above the starter. If you have skinny arms about four feet long and an extra elbow or two it's really easy. For a normal person you have to move some stuff to get room to work. There are two nuts holding the master cylinder on. Remove those and the master cylinder can be leaned toward the fender. You need a 10mm 12 pt wrench or socket to remove that bolts that hold the starter on. You may also want to drop the front drive shaft.

If that doesn't work you may be sucking air from somewhere. Any joint between the fuel tank and the injector pump is suspect.

The reluctance to go in the morning is a normal extra feature of a torque flite transmission. Especially if you part with the nose uphill. The torque converter drains if it sits for a few hours and you have to fill it up again before it will go. No problem, just let it idle in N for a little bit and you are good for the day. Some years have a check valve in a cooler line to help with this, but the check valve can cause problems so it's better without it.

LawnRam,

Have you tried starting the engine after it stalls with out priming?

Have you had hard time starting in morning or first start of day?

Is the truck parked nose up hill, nose down hill, nose level?

Usually leaking hoses, overflow valve stuck open, transfer pump with bad check valves will cause engine to be hard to start when nose pointed up hill.

Transfer pump could be going bad, putting enough pressure out with no loads or low speeds/rpms but mite noy be up to the task for load or high speeds/rpms.

Have a fuel pressure test done. 20 psi supply line to injector pump is minimum for pressure at idle.

I believe 30 psi for 2000 rpm no load.

BTW the dealer that told you to replace spark plugs drive out of your way to avoid it. LOL

Did you look to see what position the rod to the fuel shut off solenoid was in (up all the way or down all the way,or halfway between)? Before you turned ignition off.

Thank You

Thanks for your help, Joe, Ron, and Missouri Mule. I am going after the fuel lines this week. It never has a problem starting in the morning, just shifting gears. Anyway, thanks again.
