My truck is an 06 automatic 2 wheel drive quad cab. When it is idling there is a clunk when something cycles on. I thought it might be the air compressor, but it is doing it even in very cold weather. Any ideas.

Don't discount the A/C too quickly in cold weather. It runs when the defroster is on to de-humidify the air blown on the window. This might be the "clunk" you hear.

Yes, it the lights do dim. My 98 did not do that: is it normal for the 06?

Yes it's the grid heater cyclying you are hearing a relay cyle and the alternator full fielding

be careful if you look to hard you will find something you may not like. If there is something desperately wrong you will know it. Plus that thing in the glove box that comes with the truck does mention this symptom along with many others if you would only take 45 minutes away from the computer and read it. Who knows you may learn something. :-laf
