And actually the valves from 04. 5-up are inconel, aren't they? If so, that's an improvement over the 03 valves.

the valves are different and the combustion bowl is also a little different, should make a improvment, but yes it will work---up to 05'

Combustion bowl? Theres no combustion bowl on the head surface  (you must be talking about the pistons but this thread is about the HEAD!)

Robert you ever have one of these things apart?

The exhaust valves on a 2004. 5 and 05 are iconel. The 2006 changed to a different exhaust valve material.

You dont have to swap anything. Just take one head off and put on the other and it will work great.

You dont have to use the valves out of your 03 and you dont have to change lash settings.

Post#2 of this thread said it all. :-laf

With the 2004. 5 model year a new swirl configuration was implented for the cylinder head as part of the combustion recipe change. So techically 2003 and early 2004 cylinder head castings are not the same as 2004. 5 and later. But for the way TCluff's truck is configured, it may not make that much of a difference. Swirl is changed by changing how the intake runners of the cylinder casting are configured.

Also, in 2004. 5 the inconel exhaust valve was introduced. But, like jwilliams3 stated, a new exhaust valve was introduced for 2006. This is NOT the same exhaust valve as pre-2004. 5 model years, it is an all new material, hence the reason for the increased valve lash.

Wieg,

Good first post... . Another voice of reason! :) (I am aware of the improved flow of the 600 head. That was part of the promotion/marketing named changes when the 600 series was introduced)

I wonder what the new valve material is vs. what the pre 04. 5 material was?

Back to the thread:

Where did it crack at?
