The jury is still out.
It seemed to take forever to lock, but when it did, all four were spinning like crazy!

I may try to engage it quicker, instead of easeing into it. No smell of course, which is nice.
Reviewing the tape, it looks like as soon the clutch decided to grab, the tires launched, no slipping.
The only Ford to beat me, Power Snorter,(Second at Scheids), said it looked like I need to come out of hole harder. I thought I came out pretty hard as it was!
Another Cummins sniffin propane got first, by about 20 feet over me and Frank.

The rest of the class was way behind.
There was a Stack'd and Jack'd Jr. who smoked and made lots of noise-- all the way to the 50' mark!! LITERALLY smoking the tires like he was in a bleach box. Go figure.

Still had a good time, 3rd is my best finish.

Congrats on the 3rd place pull! I'm sure you'll snuff out that Pherd next time out. #ad

Any video of these pulls? I love seeing our trucks putting down the power, but rarely see anything like that around these parts.

Ya know Joe, after studying the tapes a few times more, I wonder if the thing slipped at all?
The tires just start to spin, you can't see any shuddering or slipping on the tires, they are still, then in motion, like a switch.
Maybe I should try the next gear up, and dump it!!!!
Wonder if it will take one pull a week?

The Jury is in!

Well, after several Miserable failures, one 3rd place, and one win, then last nights embarrassment, the Jury is in on the DRE Sachs clutch.

Thumbs down.

This clutch will not work on the pulling track. I even went up in power to come out of the whole easier.

On a sand track, it hooked so-so, but well enough for a win.

On hard clay it just slipped. I have normal BFG's, nothing aggressive with 25,000 miles on them, I leave the air pressure up, and I have a 22" hitch height.

I am doing everything I can to DECREASE traction, and it just won't play.

I know, take pucks off. When it comes out, Mitchell's Dual Disc is going in. No puck playing for me. If a thousand dollar clutch won't hold out of the box forget it.

The two trucks that beat me last night have been running Mitchell's clutch for over a year, towing trailers and daily driving and sled pulling about once a week. They are good runners. 340ft to my 225)Did I mention they have twice the tire I have?

No input shafts broken, just power to the ground. With half the pedal pressure, and much better streetability.

I would reccommend the DRE for street driving- if I could. It is just plain annoying on the street.

Basically, in my opinion, it does nothing well.

If you want a grabby, shuddering, clutch that will not hold any type of REAL power or playing, by all means, get one.

And start saving for your next one, because you will need it.

Gene

3rd low, I tried first high, but you need wheel speed. A couple guys run second high, but they are nuts!

Last I heard, SBC does not reccommend sled pulling on their clutch. Be careful!

Gene

I'm in the market for a new clutch that will hold a lot of power and still be street friendly. Where can i find more info on Mitchell's dual disc clutch?

www.enterpriseengine.com

The Mitchell's have built this clutch for sled pulling/trailer hauling, and have insane amounts of hp. They use it in their trucks, and have rapidly been converting most of the east coast pullers to it as the other brands fail.

I like vendors that actually use/abuse their own product, instead of using us as rolling R&D machines. If you have ever seen Lorretta come out of the hole at the track, you know what I mean!

Loretta's truck is a 12 valve with a new six speed transmission installed by Dave and the boys at Enterprise Engine. Her truck is daily family transportation, and used to pull Dave's famous white Dodge to pulls all over the east and midwest. Apparently, as much use as her truck sees on the street, it must be good enough that they can "live with it" . I'd like to hear from someone on here what kind of " street manners" the Mitchell clutches have.

I'd actually put up with a few problems, such as shuddering, or pedal effort, to have a Mitchell clutch in my truck. And to give them my business. They know what they are doing, their experience is hard-won and has come after much trial and error.

Hey Guys,

No shuttering, but a little more pedal pressure. The center disc will rattle when the clutch is depressed. But none of these are cumbersome enough to make me pull the clutch out. Tom or Gene if you guys want to drive my truck, no problem! Let me know next time we meet up and we'll go for a ride. I can also set you up with customers who run our clutch daily. I wouldn't want you to buy something that didn't meet or exceed your expectations.

The clutch is very smooth backing. Keep in mind this clutch will not slip so if you dump the clutch-you get wiplash. But, if you feather the clutch out it is a smooth as stock. It just has more pedal pressure. We trailer Dave's everywhere with mine and the means stops at the zoo, and amusement parks on the way home (the girls like the fringe benefits of pulls). We have no problems manuvering around in tight places.

Loretta sumed it up, I run the clutch also and love it. It makes a little chatter when pushed in but after about 2 days you don't even notice it. I run my truck hard and have never smelled anything burnt or after I pull down that track for that matter. My truck is also a daily driver. If you want a clutch that will hold and give you long clutch life, definetly call Doug over there and get one.

Listen! Do you hear that?

That is the sound of Tom and Gene racing to be the first to drive Loretta's truck!

I appreciate the offer, but I really think I will have to Pull the White one to be sure before I purchase. Please?

PLEEEEEEEEEAASSSSSSSE???????????

I drove Dales in the spring, It had LESS pedal pressure than the Sachs. Very smooth, but I don't remember what a stock clutch feels like. Mine was bad when I bought it, then Centerforce, then Sachs.

:D

Thanks for the reply, and the offer, Loretta ! No problem taking your word for it, but it still would be fun to drive it, to compare. I'll let you drive my truck too, if you don't throw stuff at me after you drive it, and call me stupid... :D

Say Loretta,

Knowing how much you tow, how does the marine cam affect the power range? Does it have to be revved higher to stay in the power band?
