Well my inner axel seal took a dump on me. its the right side one. has any one done this fix them selfs?

i have worked on the D44's on chevs, and D30 on jeeps.

is there any tricks, or "watch out for this" on the D60's, before i tear into this thing. a parts break down would be nice.

thanks, Bob.

I did mine a couple of years ago when I did king pins. You will need to remove the ring gear/ carrier assy. The seal comes out threw the center section. Us the Dodge seal also. A aftermarket seal will not work to good. The Dodge seal has a raised metal guide to help guide the axle threw the seal. The aftermarket seals do not.

A 2" bore brush works good for cleaning the inside of the axle tubes out.

Let me borrow this thread for a moment with a related question. Philip, where do you get the bore brushes. I am doing several rear axles and they all need a really good cleaning down the tubes. I figured to make something so I could put a drive device through from the outside and then catch the brush from the carrier side. Through cleaning and rinse with fluid from the outside. On the 80 I am repairing, I think the brush needs to be about four inches. Surely there is a brush for a cannon or something like that but I have not seen one to buy.

Thanks

James

I picked up NAPA seals first. Then when I saw what the orginal seals were. I took them back and ordered from Dodge. If memory serves me right I think those seals were around $15. each.

While your that deep into the front axle. replace both seals. No sence and have the other on bite you a few months down the road.

to set these seals into the axle tubes. I used a long piece of 1/2" all thread and two pieces of steel to pull the seal into its bore. There isn't much room to swing a hammer in the carrier assy.

All the parts manuals I have seen for these year model trucks are micro film. The dealers don't turn loose of them eather.

For bore brushes check the injection molding supply companys. These large brushes are used to clean the bores on injection barrells. I used to work for a injection molding company. So I have a 2" bore brush. These things are not cheap. I think a 2" is around $200. and that was a few years ago before the plant closed I worked at.
