D70 pinion question

What would cause the teeth on the pinion gear to be sheared off? Is it the pinion depth and the r&p not meshing together correctly or what? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated as i am fixin to rebuild my r&p

What About Your Pinion Bearings, Good, Bad, If Not That, It Wouldn't Be To Deep, I Would Say It Wasn't In Far Enough. Good Luck

thats what i was thinkin that the pinion was in to far. The bearing looks good still but while im in there i am going to replace everything. Thanks for the input

I second that. You don't state if it is high miles or rebuild or much to go on. But generally speaking, the 70 is good up to the original limit on horse power. There are weaker links on the truck than the 70.



While I'm in there- - -.

If you have broken teeth, replace everything would be the only reliable aproach. Get professional help as you may also have a warped housing. The design geometery of a ring and pinion is quite complex and the gear set must run at near exactly the design specification. It is sometimes easier (Money and time wise) to get a complete axle from a salvage truck.

Well the truck is still new to me and the previous owner knew nothing really of the truck other than he got the truck in Kansas City... . The truck has 224K on it with i believe its the Banks Stinger pack on it, which i consist of turbo upgrade, intercooler, 14cm non wastegate, fuel screw turned, 6" lift, 37" Super Swampers, 4. 10 gears... .



I was wondering if maybe the first owner who did all the upgrades might have set the r&p up incorrectly... .

My brother was driving when 3 pinon teeth were removed from the 70 in the rear of my 93, and it was about the same mileage. Put the carrier back in and see if the carrier has end play. I found no bad shims in mine, and did not check, but I suspect that my carrier was moving back and forth. I put in a new ring and pinion, and all new bearings, and its been working fine so far(my getrag is another topic). My brother contends he was not racing, did not lay a hole shot or anything... ... Not that it matters, my truck is not babied anyway.



The drive train shop I bought the new gears from, said it was from the driver dropping the clutch. If that was the case, it would have happened about 200,000 miles sooner.



I pulled the cover off a 90 CTD with 160,000 miles, and the carrier had a bunch of endplay from failed shims. One of the gears would have started shelling teeth with that carrier moving around, if put under a trailer. This truck is bone stock, except for the injection pump being set up 10% higher in fuel rate.
