OK so I wrecked my powr lok and am looking for a Detroit Locker for my D80 with 3. 54 gears. And they dont make one. But I have seen people use a D80 4. 10 unit and shim them different and they will work. Also have seen people get a D70HD unit and machine the holes for a D80 ring gear since the ID of the ring is the same. So which one is stronger? The D80 unit is backorder til september 10th or so and the D70HD units are still in stock at a few places. The D70HD unit is also $120 cheaper. Just wondering if I should wait for the D80 or make the D70HD work?

My D70 locker in my D80 Has been holding up for 3 years now. After I trashed a D70 and a limited slip carrier. I think the D70 Detroits are plenty tough.

have done many of the 70 conversions into 80s they work fine. you can also take a 70 unit machine the brng. journal back . 125 on each side and now you have the hd version.

What portion of the journal do you machine back, The outer portion to shorten the journal or the inner portion so the bearing fits deaper on the journal? That is one I wasn't aware of. I never did know what the difference in a d70 and hd70. What would make that a HD? Just curious.

Yeah sorry for being dumb here. So in the end I want to have the HD version? Also whats all involved in making the ring gear fit?

I beleive the HDs have thicker tubes and 35 splines. I want to know this stuff to. I wonder if I can put my discs on a drum brake srw 80 too.

Yes You Machine The Bearing Seat So That The Hd Carrier Bearing Will Fit On. Thats The Difference A 70 Hd Uses The Same Bearings On The Carrier As A 80. to Fit A 80 Ring Gear You Need To Drill Out The Ring Gear Bolt Holes To The Size Of The 80. no The Spindel Pattern On A Drum Brake Axles Are Different Then The Discs Unless You Are Talking About Aftermarket Disc Then It Will Bolt On To A 80 Drum Brake
