Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) D80 to D70?

Hello All, I will be swapping my 1997 D80 for a 1995 D70 in the next few weeks and I was wondering if anyone knows of any foreseeable issues with the conversion?

Your driveshaft might be too short. The Dana 80 nose is like 1- 1. 5 inches longer. I have a Dana 70 driveshaft lieing around somewhere. You might be able to move your carrier bearing back and get away with this. You also need the cradles on the bottom of the axle. Most of the other stuff should be ok.

I can also vouch for the fact that the driveshaft used in a D70 truck is longer than the same truck (same vintage, same cab/bed, same engine/transmission/t-case combination, wheelbase, etc. ) with a D80.

I thought that the Dana Axle in the 4x4 and standard transmission 2wd were a Dana 80. that being a hybrid, Dana 80 carrier housing and guts and Dana 70 axle tubes. so the drive shaft would be the same

His dually has a D80 and he is saying he is putting in a D70, I am not following what your saying.

I think that the axles are wider by several inches and a single wheel would stick out.

I'l bet you can. The carrier bearings have gone out on my 98 LSD D70 every 75K. My 95 without LSD has 239K on it without a problem and was still pulling the same trailer at 180K the 98 was at the first 75K failure. I am near that mileage again. Dana 80 SRWs were impossible to find the last time mine went out though. Good luck.

Yes the carrier and 3. 54 gears but no axles shafts, but has the drums, brake lines and cables just put yopur axle shafts in and run it...

Wait a minute.....
Just cut the lug nuts down and run single wheels in the back. Works fine, tires barely stick out more than usual, I ran this setup for awhile but had to ditch it as I ruined an axle stub. . Not related to running singles of course.
