Question for Jelag

Setting up air compressor

While working on another problem today I noticed a loose battery cable clamp nut. I looked at the tool box 30 feet away and the pair of Kline 9 inch pliers in my hand.

I heard his voice in the back of my mind saying " If you touch that nut, with those pliers I will see to it that ever nut you come across at night or when it's cold will have been rounded off by some jerk with a pair of pliers".

I headed for the box end wrench. Thanks Dad.

Ah think of my old man everyday, even thought he lives 700 miles away. Just got to spend a week with mom/dad a few weeks ago since they move away 2 years ago to retire on a hobby farm. Did the usual, sighted in the rifle/quadding,cut up enough fire wood to take them till spring---sat on the front porch every night---"peaceful". I mentioned my dad to a co- worker today that was complaining that her daughter came home with a $1400. 00 cell phone bill:eek::eek::eek: this month and wanted mommy to pay the bill(of course she is going to cover her little princess). I said my old man would of solved the problem right away----- with a 10LBS sledge hammer in the shop---"PROBLEM SOLVED SON-----NOW PAY THE BILL":-laf:-laf:-laf. It funny how your parents alive or have moved on influence your everyday life. PS---my dads favorite saying----When someone would say to him "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink"----DAD would always reply BUT I CAN DROWN THAT S. O. B. ------DW

The other side of the coin:

My thirty year old son died just over six years ago. (Heart defect)

He and I worked on our cars and trucks together, and shared the same tool box.

He made several custom tools for hard to get to nuts and bolts, remote starter buttons, etc, that I still have in our tool box.

It brings back very special memories and feelings when I see or use those tools.

MY Dad's speciality wasn't fixing our cars, but he was pretty darn good with anything made of wood, nothing too fancy, no lathe work just good attention to the project at hand.

I have his B. S. A. hand axe from his Wood Badge class, he didn't make Wood Badge, but he knew how to put an edge on the axe or any knife he owned.

I take good care of that hand axe, keep it in wood handles, nice and tight, I made the leather sheath and with an edge that he'd say needed just a bit more.

Thanks Dad.

My dad was good with wood also. Fact is he helped me build my house and he used an old 10 inch Craftsman table saw to make some pretty cool stuff including his kitchen cabinets. .
I just got to upgrade from his saw to a Craftsman Professional cabinet saw. Funny how the first thing that came to mind was that MY dad would have really like this saw...

I will ALWAYS Miss him.

Dave

Thankful...

I'm on the other side as well... I'm the first of 4 kids, 28 years old, and the only one still at home. With my parent's health beginning to decline, I'm increasingly thankful for each minute that my dad and I spend wrenching on the vehicles.

Dad is never one to take shortcuts... he will do/re-do/go the extra mile everytime to make sure it is done right, and takes pride in what he does. I realize that everyday now is a gift, and these times will soon be some of my most treasured memories.

Thanks for the reflections... Eric

It was not my Dad who drilled that one into me but the sentiment is there. Had to fix a lot of similar problems after some lazy individual did the last fix with pliers. Same goes for crescent wrenches when a box wrench is called for especially the cheap nuts used on some of the equipment today

My grandfather used to carry a 6" crescent wrench around in his pocket on the farm. I saw him cut wire, put cars and tractors back together with nothing more than that old wrench.

He wasn't a perfectionist, but his stuff always ran when he needed it and got him where he needed to get and back again.

Sometimes I really miss him. Kinda like now. .
