4BT Questions

1989 CK-style Crew-Cab GM conversion Complete

can anyone supply me with the size measerments of say 2000-2002 ctd?just the motor and transmission not the whole truck. such as hight (lowest part to highest part). length, width, all that good stuff. i am looking into a major one of a kind project and want to see if it is even feasable. what would i be looking at price wise for a smacked up ram with a ctd as a donor truck for all the parts and such. thinking of a ctd in my body dropped kota. someone also told me to look into the cummins 4bt motor. anyone have any info on that motor?

Depends on your body drop.

I've put one in a stock bodied Dak the only body mods required was to massage the firewall a little.

The 4bt is identicle in height its just two cylinders shorter in length.

6bt? How much time do you have and how good are your skills?

Anythings possible, you just have to know your limits.

This is a 6bt cummins in a dakota body

A 4bt is a much more realistic fit. I've seen several 4b dakota repowers over the past few years.

i think i could pull it off if i really wanted. but the body drop is whats gonna hurt. i absolutly have to still be able to lay out the truck on the ground. want to be completely different. do you have any pics of the 4b cummins in a dakota, also do you have a links to any websites with details about the 4b cummins. i cant seam to find any sites with details, such as horse power and torque, how friendly are the aftermarket companies with that 4b motor?

The 4b's are no different than the 6b's. Anything you can get for the 6b's in aftermarket setups will work with a 4b. Injection pumps can be bumped up by any shop that services injection pumps. An innercooler is the best addition you can add to them IMHO if they don't have them in the chassis type you find your donor engine in.

Without seeing how you have the body drop done, its hard to tell you yes or no. The pics I posted are going to give you the same dimensional references as a 4b in height, that is no different either way.

The biggest modification you'll probably need to do is to shorten the oil pan and sump somehow if you plan on grinding the frame on the ground. The 4b will be prone to vibration at low RPM's.

Have you searched for 4b, 4bt, 4bta on this forum yet? There is alot of info here on it alone. Cummins has lots of references to their 4 b series online for actual HP/Torque rating as equipped factory as well as upper recommended ratings.

I dont think I want to start a thread right now but if you would like to see pictures just drop me a e-mail and I will send them to you.

here is a tdr link to a picture of the truck that was taken prior to ripping it all apart for the 6BT conversion.

Here is another one of my posts that will tell you a little about the truck:1997 Dodge Dakota Extended Cab that I purchased brand new from Scranton Dodge. I owned this trrck for aprox. 3 years when I needed more. My first investment was the 5 1/2" tuff-country lift which after 2 sets of ball joints ans 1 set of tie rods enough was enough. In Feburary of 2002 my friend Eric and I pulled my Dakota riding on a 5 1/2" lift and 33" tires into the garage and began the process of installing a Dana 60 front axle and a Sterling (I dont like to say the "F" word) rear axle out of a 88 F-350 which was completed in July of 2002 and rolled out on a set of 35" BFG All-Terrains. In May of 2003 I decided w/ a little bit of pressure to go from 35's to 38"'s so w/ a little bit more lift and a loaner set of tires and wheels from a friend Guy I was the only Dakota I had ever seen riding around on 38's except for the one Petersons did but that doesnt count because they hava unlimited budget $$$$. After riding with the 4. 10 gears and 318 c. i. engine ans seeing all of my close friends w/ their diesels I posed the question to Eric "Do you think we could stuff a Cummins under the hood of my Dakota" and his answer was "I dont see why not" soo that brings me to where I am right now. We are aprox 65%-75% done. It should have between 425-500 Hp and 900-1000 ft/lb of torque when it is done. I am going to try to post some pictures of it but like I said im new to the TDR thing and not sure how to post pictures yet but I will learn. If any of you want to see som pictures just e-mail me.

Dude - that is VERY slick! You've given me an idea or two with regard to how in the heck I'm going to do my radiator/IC. Did you fab that stuff or have it made by someone? The welds look sweet and the finished products fit very well.

I'm assuming there's going to be some big electric fans mounted in front of the condensor? There didn't seem to be enough room to put 'em behind the radiator. :)

Matt

I didnt do the fab myself, Eric (AKA the guy that did the solid axle swap) is doing all of the welding and fab. The condensor isnt going to be mounted in front it will be in the back between the frame rails along w/ the trans cooler. Their just isnt enough room for the rad. intercooler fans along w/ a condensor. The pictures above actually show the intercooler but the custom alum. rad. is behind all of it.

what did you have to do with the brake booster. did you have to relocate that or did it fit with it in factory location? also how much does the oil pan sit below the fatory front crossmember. how are you working the steering bars? send me as many pics as you got to me. i thinking of doing this swap in a body dropped truck. gonna be insane amount of work. thanks. -- email address removed --

Here's one of the pics (resized) that Rob sent me...

It doesn't look like he had to relocate the booster/master cylinder at all... if he did - it sure doesn't show in this pic.

Matt

thats looks sweet. looks like pulling the motor forward like i was thinking would save alot of work on the firewall. also from the looks of that pic that their would be enough clearance for my truck even with the body drop. but i think i would be looking at doing somthing with the oil pan and also the motor hight cause i am losing 3. 5 inches of clearance cause of the body drop. but what a truck a ctd dakota would be though. im thinking maybe saving up money until next winter so i could go buy a wrecked ram with all the stuff i need, computer and all. im not worried about guages to much, ill just run the diesel important ones. egt, fuel, boost, transmission ,ect. my truck is being done mostly for shows so dont need speedometer.
