This is what has happened so far in my 211,000 miles on the truck. I like this truck very much but it has gotten very expensive. But the question is when do you know when to throw in the towel and get a new one.

I just wondered if anyone Else's has had my kind of luck.

Since when are normal maintenance items like adjusting the valves, and replacing the brakes considered a problem?

Choppy if you take out everything covered under warranty and your brake maintenance (you must be hard on brakes) it does not look that bad. Looks like you have a lot of seal problems??? Must be a problem with the installation of the new seals for that many failures. I've seen better for 200,000+ miles but I don't know how heavy you tow or haul or how you maintained the truck. Maybe it is time to buy a new one.

Only thing I could see before I got tired of reading is replacing axle u- joints and then 9000 miles later replacing the ball joints.

Must have been the dealer doing warranty work.

I have to assume axle u-joints means four wheel drive and if that is the case they should have been changed at the same time.

As for the brakes, I just changed the front pads after 120,000 miles and they were only 5/8s worn.

This is NOT to discount all the recalls/warranty screw-ups the first owner had. I'm sure everyone will recall all the problems these trucks had right out of the box.

Buy a new one if you don't mind going $40,000 in the hole, plus interest. But if you really use your brakes that much they won't last on the new truck either.

Yours,

Jay

Yep it looks like you might be a little hard on brakes. The ones that caught my eye were 178,000, 183,000, 193,000. Thats only 5000 and 10,000 miles on front brakes which is terrible. I bought mine with 130,000 on and havnt had to do anything to it. I have done some stuff because of not knowing how it was maintained before but nothing had to be done and I have 50,000 miles on the front brakes I put on shortly after purchase. With 185,000 on it it doesnt need anything that I can think of.

Even though things are covered under warranty, including the replacement transmissions, it is still a major hassle just having to get the truck to the dealer to work on it. I had four transmission rebuilds by the dealer in 33K miles before they gave up and replaced the whole thing; no more problems. Doing without a truck for a week or more at a time, as well as dropping it off the evening before, etc. etc. became aggravating. Before you judge me as hard on the truck, this puppy is babied, it all started when the dealer tried to fix the infamous lip seal issue on the direct drum. It went downhill from there. Then the truck has been in for one issue after another due to recalls or design issues, but I still love my truck. Aggravating? You bet, but I still think it's better than the others.

The brake issues you are experiencing seem excessive; I had approx. 40K on my front pads before I changed them, and they still had 30% material left on them. Putting the one ton cylinders on the rear helped considerably since that time. Your normal maintenance issues occur with any brand of truck, so that is part of owning the truck.

Good luck with whatever decision you make regarding the truck.
